Quick Sets
Laura Katarzynski can't stop serving up aces. A week after breaking Taylor Muff's program Division I career aces record, Katarzynski was after yet another milestone against the Bengals. Her six aces tied for the most in a single match in UNC history with Kyndall Feather, Daisy Schultz, Makenna Meier and Andrea Spaustat.
As a team, the Bears stacked up 10 aces against Idaho State. The mark ties the highest number of aces this season. UNC also recorded 10 against North Dakota at the Bradley Invitational.
Senior outside hitter Kailey Jo Ince keeps knocking down the competition. The Hesston, Kansas native is fifth in the Big Sky in attacks per set (9.72), third in kills per set (3.50), third in total points (251.5), and second in total kills (224).
Following her first Big Sky Player of the Week award, sophomore Lauren Strain did not let up last week against the Wildcats and Bengals. The Thornton, Colorado native led the Bears in kills over the two matches and has reached double-figures in kills in four consecutive matches.
Between Daisy Schultz and Syd Cole, the Bears' setters have been the engine behind UNC's offense this season. Schultz ranks first in the Big Sky in assists per set at 9.54. Northern Colorado is also tops in the conference as a team with 12.12 assists per set and 776 total assists.
Last time out
After its first conference loss of the season to Weber State, the Bears rebounded with a resounding sweep over Idaho State. Laura Katarzynski produced six aces and UNC hit over .300 for just the second time this season to get Northern Colorado back on track in the Big Sky.
Scouting Idaho
Head coach Debbie Buchanan is the most tenured coach in the Big Sky Conference. With more than 300 wins under her belt, the Vandals are never an easy out.
This season, most of Idaho's production has come from seniors Nikki Ball and Allison Munday. Munday ranks fourth in the conference in aces per set (.43), fifth in points per set (3.94) and eighth in kills per set (3.11). Meanwhile, middle blocker Nikki Ball is eighth in blocks per set (1.02) and is second on the team in kills per set (2.28).
History against the Vandals
Last spring, the Bears matched up against Idaho in three consecutive games, ending the regular season in Moscow before going toe-to-toe in the opening round of the conference tournament. UNC is 10-7 against the Vandals and has won each of the last five meetings.
Scouting Eastern Washington
The Eagles are finally traveling on the road after enjoying a four-game homestand. Most recently EWU split with the Montana's, falling to the Bobcats before picking up its second conference win over the Griz.
Fourth-year head coach Leslie Flores-Cloud is glad to have Ashlyn Blotzer back in the lineup this season. A second team All-Big Sky selection from a season ago, Blotzer ranks No. 1 in the conference in hitting percentage at .359. That mark is also good enough for 71st in the country.
Eastern Washington comes into the week as a strong serving team. At 1.57 aces per set, the Eagles are fourth-best in the Big Sky.
History against the Eagles
Dating back to the first matchup between the two programs in 2006, UNC is 22-10 against Eastern Washington. Last spring, Bears fans might remember the 15-5 run in the fourth set that helped Northern Colorado continue its six-match win streak over the Eagles.
Looking Ahead.
Northern Colorado heads back out on the road next week for matches against Sacramento State and Portland State. The Bears return home on November 5, at 6 p.m. MT against Idaho State. Tickets for the match can be purchased at UNCBears.com/Tickets.
