Bears Power Past Tigers, Fall to Cyclones

Northern Colorado split games on Friday in the Paradise Classic
MANOA, HI – Northern Colorado went 1-1 on the second day of the Hawai'i Paradise Classic. UNC earned an extra-inning win over Memphis, 6-5, for the team's first victory of the season. The Bears fell to Iowa State in the team's first game on Friday, 11-0.
Bears vs. Cyclones
Lainey Hanehan started in the circle for the Bears, going against Iowa State's Ellie Spelhaug. Hanehan pitched will through the first three innings, allowing only three baserunners. Spelhaung was equally as strong, allowing only a pair of Bears to reach base.
In the top of the fourth inning, ISU broke the tie with a solo home run. They would add on three more runs in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run to pull ahead 4-0. Spelhaug continued to pitch effectively against the Bears, holding them off the bases entirely.
Erin Caviness came into the game in the top of the sixth inning and quickly retired the side to keep the score at 4-0. Spelhaug matched in the bottom half of the inning.
ISU blew the game open in the top of the seventh, striking for 7 runs. The deficit for the Bears was now 11-0.
In the bottom the seventh, the Bears were retired in order and ISU won the game 11-0. UNC fell to 0-2 on the season with Hanehan taking her second loss. Spelhaug earned the win after pitching a seven-inning, one hitter.
Bears vs. Tigers
Sophomore Maggie Thurston made her first start of the season against Memphis. The Tigers had Zoey LeCompte in the circle.
Memphis would score first in the game, during the bottom of the second inning. A pair of RBI singles for the Tigers gave them a 2-0 lead over UNC.
The Bears were held in check at the plate until the top of the fourth inning as Emma Brockmann led off with a single. UNC loaded the bases in the inning and Brandi Haller drew a walk to bring pinch-runner, Katie Simonsgaard, into score. A fielder's choice by Paola Villegas scored the Bears' second run and a sac fly by Amanda Hedges brought in the third. UNC had flipped the game and was up 3-2.
The game moved to a pitching dual between the Bears and Tigers. Lainey Hanehan came in and relived Thurston in the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Memphis managed to score the tying run on an RBI single of Hanehan.
The Bears went into extra innings with runners being placed at second base now in the top of the eighth. After a single by Mady Young, Brockmann came to the plate and delivered for the Bears with a three-run, home run. UNC was 6-3, looking for their first win of the season.
Memphis did not go quietly in the bottom of the, scoring a pair of runs to pull within one of the Bears. Hanehan closed out the Tigers with a pop-out to second base.
UNC won the game 6-5 for the team's first win of the season.

Northern Colorado will close out its Paradise Classic on Saturday with two bracket games at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m(MT).
