UNC track and field broke the men's 3000, 5000 and distance relay school records
COLUMBIA, SC – It was a historic performance for Northern Colorado's track and field team this weekend at the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina. Three school records went down alongside 15 marks that made the Big Sky performance list and 15 personal best marks.
The three records that were broken all came on the men's side in distance events of the 3000, 5000 and distance medley. Stephen Haas broke a 40-year old record in the 5000 meter with a time of 14:29.47. Jeff Kicia held the mark the past 40 years at 14:29.72. Not only is it a school record, but a facility record at South Carolina's Indoor Track and Field Complex. His mark is the eighth-best in the Big Sky this year.
While Haas broke the 5000 meter record, he saw his 3000 meter broke by teammate Josh Campbell. Campbell ran an 8:20.16, 16 seconds better than Haas' record.
Campbell was a part of the Distance Relay that broke the school record by 18 seconds. He was joined by Jesse Hayward, Kyle Thomas and Cameron Ross crossing the line in 10:11.94. It is the best time this year in the Big Sky.
Northern Colorado's women's distance relay also posted a top-five Big Sky time finishing in 12:27.60. The team was comprised of Viktorija Osipenko, Dorian Nesby, Amber Johnson and Emily Wilson.
Three other Bears had top 10 Big Sky performances at the Carolina Challenge in Jeremy Romero (5000m), Tyler Thimsen (Triple Jump) and Kylie Chavez (Triple Jump).
Romero ran a PR of 14:39.18 to rank 10th in the conference this year. Thimsen had a jump of 14.54m (47' 8 ½") in the men's triple jump that ranks fourth in the conference, while Chavez mark of 11.55m (37' 10 ¾") is the ninth-best on the women's side.
What They Said
Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Wayne Angel
"It was a great weekend for UNC, we were challenged on many levels as a team. We learned a lot about ourselves, what our strengths were as well as our weaknesses. We've still got a lot of work to do but I am very optimistic about the future of this program."
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado looks to continue the positive momentum next weekend at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite hosted by Nebraska February 7 and 8.
