LUBBOCK, Texas – The UNC Baseball 2020 season opener pitted the Bears against the Houston Baptist Huskies in a neutral site matchup held at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park on the campus of Texas Tech. The Bears got up early and never looked back, taking the 7-1 win over the Huskies.
Issac Bracken was the star of the show for the Bears on Friday evening, who started on the mound for UNC to begin his senior campaign, and he didn't disappoint. Only allowing one hit in the first inning, Bracken was perfect for the next five innings. He did not allow another hit on the day and racked up nine strike outs before being relieved by Connor Anderson.
The Bears were excellent running the bases, with the Bears scoring seven runs on eight hits, while leaving nine runners on base. Hayden Heinze led the Bears going 2-3 with three runs scored, and four other Bears pitched in one run each. UNC also stole three bases for the day.
Billy Moreland also went 2-3 and gave the Bears their first home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to increase the Bears lead to 5-0. UNC added two more runs in the fourth to make it 7-0.
While Bracken gets the win for his superb performance, he's not the only one who deserves credit. Connor Anderson, Logan Chase, and Andrew Willmon only allowed two more hits to the Huskies in the final three innings to clinch the 7-1 win.
Here is what Head Coach Carl Iwasaki had to say after the opening day win,
"Great opening day win for the Bears. Bracken ptches a solid game with nine k's, 1 hit and 1 bb. We are looking for Issac to be our horse on the mound for us this season. Leach, Glenn, Hayden Heinze and Billy Moreland all had timely hits to get us going early in the ball game. We have to come out tomorrow with energy and execute our game to compete against a solid Texas Tech ball club."
UNC will play game two for the weekend in Lubbock Saturday afternoon at 3 PM when they face their host and nationally ranked #3 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
