COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –The start of a busy weekend for the Bears men's tennis team began with a neutral site match against the Bryant Bulldogs Friday afternoon at the Air Force Academy, with the Bears being narrowly defeated 4-3.
Bryant was able to take the doubles point with wins over Adolfo Arroyo/John Geisberts 6-2 and over Thomas Pudney/Julian Kenzlers 6-4. The Bears did get a win from Kyle Pease/Nick Wade who took their doubles match 6-3.
The Bears had a decent showing in singles play, splitting the six matches. Kyle Pease had the only three-set win of the day, defeating his opponent 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. John Geisberts had a win in the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-4, and Thomas Pudney won handedly in the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-0.
Adolfo Arroyo fell in two sets 7-6, 6-2, as well as did Alex Exsted 6-4, 6-1. Julian Kenzlers had a very tight three-set dual that didn't fall in his favor, being defeated 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.
The Bryant Bulldogs were no easy opponent for the Bears, as they have six straight appearances in the NCAA tournament coming out of the Northeastern conference.
Head Coach Ben Gendron had this to say after the first match of the weekend,
"The guys competed their butt's off and we had our opportunities. Unfortunately it did not go our way. The loss stings but we are more focused on the bigger picture of improving each match as a team, which is what we have done so far. We have another opportunity tomorrow to improve as a team."
The Bears will be right back in action Saturday morning when they take on their host for the weekend, the Air Force Falcons. The weekend will be capped off with a Sunday afternoon meeting against Colorado College.
