Bears Kick-Off Fall Schedule at Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The fall season for the UNC Bears Men's Tennis team began with a trip to Ventana Country Club in Tucson, Ariz. for the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona. The three-day event had the Bears facing off against a strong field of schools including Northern Arizona, BYU, San Diego State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Grand Canyon, and host Arizona.
Kyle Pease/Nick Wade served as the top doubles team for the Bears, coming up just short in their first match against Lang/Novak of Grand Canyon who took the match 7-5. It was a similar story in the next match against Arizona for Pease/Wade, who were narrowly edged again 7-5 by Hassey/Sakagawa.
The doubles team of Adolfo Arroyo/John Giesberts faced off against the eventual doubles champions Karpovets/Block from Arizona in their first round matchup. Karpovets/Block came away with the 6-1 win. Arroyo/Giesberts bounced back in their next match with a decisive 6-2 victory over Grant/Webber of Grand Canyon. The third matchup for Arroyo/Giesberts ended with a 7-5 loss to Bermejo/Dobai of New Mexico.
Thomas Pudney/Julian Kenzlers added another doubles win for the Bears in their first round matchup against Magne/Kovacevic of Grand Canyon by a score of 6-4. Kenzlers/Pudney went on to fall to Traxler/Auffray of San Diego State 6-1 in the next round.
In singles play, Kyle Pease picked up a win in the first round in three-sets over Jake Tronsdon from New Mexico 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The strongest showing in singles play from the Bears came from John Giesberts, who advanced to the championship round of his draw by defeating Jared Horwood of Arizona 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (13) in his first duel, and taking down Luis Flores of New Mexico State 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round. Giesberts was defeated by Conner Olsen of Arizona in the championship round.
The fall tournament season will continue for the Bears this weekend when they travel south to Colorado Springs to compete in the Air Force Invitational.
