COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – UNC Men's Tennis stayed in-state this past weekend to compete against 10 teams from across the region in the Bedford Cup hosted by the Air Force Academy.
In doubles play, Thomas Pudney/Julian Kenzlers rolled to a third-place finish in the tournament by defeating Hendrix/Waldman of Air Force 6-3, Steele/Groves of Northern Arizona 6-4, and Menard/Visser of New Mexico State 6-4. Pudney/Kenzlers would fall to eventual champions Castelino/Del Valle of Denver 6-4.
Adolfo Arroyo/John Giesberts fell in a close battle 7-6(4) to Parker/Williams of Southern Utah, Kyle Pease/Nick Wade fell 6-3 to E Pudney/Shaffrey of Montana.
The Bears jumped out to a hot start in singles by winning five of their first round matchups. Adolfo Arroyo captured a three-set victory over Ludvig Hallgren of Montana 6-7(3), 5-7, 6-4. Nick Wade won a three-set battle of his own over Justin Waldman of Air Force 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-2.
Kyle Pease left no doubt in his 6-1, 6-0 win over Chris Steele of Northern Arizona, while Alex Exsted added another win over Northern Arizona 6-4, 6-2 by defeating Mikael Purne.
Head Coach Ben Gendron had this to say after the successful weekend.
"The guys played great over the weekend. We talked about energy, positivity, and great body language. Simple things we can control that will help us tremendously. That definitely helped us out in doubles and carried over into singles as we won 5 first round matches. Julian and Tom were so in sync together this weekend on the doubles court. They took on the challenge and defeated a few of the top teams in the tournament to eventually finish 3rd place. Julian had a real tough loss to the #2 seed in a 3rd set. He had his chances, but what I was most proud of was how he bounced back the next days and took care of his opponents in straight sets. That showed a lot of maturity and mental growth on his part."
The next outing for the team will be the five-day ITA Mountain Regionals starting October 16th in Denver, Colo.
