GCU Outlasts Bears in Final Match of Tournament
8/31/2019 10:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Greeley, Colo. - With both teams going 2-0 in their previous tournament games, the final game of the Hampton Inn and Suites Northern Colorado Classic was setup to be a good one. It ended up being a drag out, knockdown, heavyweight battle from start to finish.Â
Â
Both teams threw punches early, going back and forth in a close set until GCU pulled ahead 18-14. The Bears used a 6-3 run to get within one point, but the Lopes would finish the first set with a win, 25-23. KJ Ince got off to another hot start for the Bears tallying five kills in the first set.Â
Â
The second set started similar to the first with both teams exchanging points until GCU made a late run to take an 18-15 lead. The Bears would rally to tie it up at 24 and 26, before taking the lead at 28-27 and eventually the set, 30-28. Taylor Muff and Maddy Bremer came alive in the second set with five kills each to help power the Bears to the set win. Not to be outdone, Ince added 6 more kills to her total. Head Coach Lyndsey Oates on the attack tonight, "I thought our left sides did score well, they definitely gave us a chance to win. If our left sides are hitting that percentage, we should be winning those matches."
Â
The Lopes came out strong in the third set, building a 4-point lead before the Bears would go on a run of their own to tie it up at 12. After that it was a race to 20 that the Bears won, building a 3-point lead before GCU came roaring back to tie it at 24. The battle would continue until the Lopes would eventually win the 3rdset, 28-26.
Â
GCU started the 4thset on a 6-1 run but the Bears stayed patient and would go on one of their own, to tie it at 10. Both teams would find themselves tied again at 24 and headed to extra points. After a number of service errors by the Bears, the Lopes would eventually pull away and take the set 27-24, and the match 3-1. Coach Oates added, "You're not going to beat a good team, shooting ourselves in the foot like that."
Â
Ince led everyone tonight with 20 kills and Muff followed closely with 16. Daisy Schultz topped her previous performance of the day by totaling 55 assists throughout the match. Kyndall Feather and Muff led the team with 12 digs each and Schultz added 11.Â
Â
The Bears played without their senior leader Taylor Els who went down in the previous match. "We missed her tonight," Coach Oates said. "We missed her senior leadership and her play making. When we lose by six points, she would make up for that."
Â
"That game was a good learning experience for us," Coach Oates added. "We played similar in our first two matches and got away with it a little bit but couldn't get away with it tonight. Maybe it hits the point home a little more that we've got work to do. We're seeing a lot of promising things but we're not there yet."
Â
The Bears will participate in the Wyoming Invite starting on September 6thand will face College of Charleston. Visit UNCBears.com for game information.Â
