Bears Go 2-0 in Friday Day at Wyoming Invite
9/6/2019 9:53:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Laramie, Wyo.- Carrying momentum from a strong opening weekend, Northern Colorado volleyball went 2-0 on the first day of the UniWyo Invite on Friday. The Bears defeated College of Charleston in a five set match before sweeping Buffalo in the night cap.Â
The Bears won their first match against College of Charleston 3-2. In the first set, the Bears steamrolled through with 13 kills and 35 total attacks. Maddy Bremer and Daisy Schultz both had 3 kills each, and the Bears compiled an .371 hitting percentage. By no surprise, during the second set Kyndall Feather set her career high for digs, shooting far past her pervious record at 15, to finish at 25 total digs against Charleston. While Feather lead the team in the second set, both teams put up a good fight with the Cougars evening the match at one apiece.Â
The Bears bounced back in the 3rd set by winning 25-16 with 11 kills. Just when the Bears thought they had the upper-hand Charleston advanced themselves by winning the 4th set 25-19.Â
Head coach Lyndsey Oates, "We struggled for sure at times, but we served pretty tough, and we we're able to keep them out of system, and I overall thought Jayden McCartny and Maddy Bremer kept us alive."Â
Set five was short, but intense. Both teams couldn't pull too far ahead of one another. Sitting at neck-and-neck most of the 5th set, the Bears pulled through taking a win to the set at 16-14. Bremer, along with Taylor Muff, ended with 14 overall kills as well as McCartney with 13 overall kills.
More on what Coach Oates said: "We are able to go pretty deep into our bench, so that's a good sign of our depth this year, and to pull out a win against a quality team was great. This was a good learning match for us, and luckily we were able to come out on top"
The Bears took the lessons learned in the first match and came out and dominated Buffalo 3-0 later in the evening. The Bears came out strong and aggressive against Buffalo. Mackenzie Harris lead the team with the most attacks at 12 kills and 19 total attacks in the first set. The Bears had no problem reaching a .619 hitting percentage as shown in their 25-10 1st set victory. It seemed as if there was not even enough time to breath before the Bears were up again and in the lead during their second set. With 15 kills and 28 total attacks, our offense was on point today.Â
Coach Oates says, "We were significantly better offensively than we were this morning, we found a good rhythm, and Lauren, Kenzie, and KJ were really efficient. They all made good decisions, they were aggressive so that was a good flow for us."Â
Through the 3rd and final set the Bears kept a steady mindset and ran the final score up to 25-16, sweeping Buffalo. With three aces on this game, libero, Kyndall Feathers continued to impress.Â
Coach Oates, "Kyndalll continues to be a threat from the service line, she gave us a couple of really good runs as well. She's doing a good job as our libero right now."Â
After a long day of volleyball the Bears are feeling good with two more wins under their belt. As for heading into tomorrow, the Bears face overall 2-2 Wyoming at 6PM for their final game in the Wyoming Invite.Â
