Jasmine Gayles brings UNC women's basketball's recruiting class to six new players
Head coach Jenny Huth and the Northern Colorado women's basketball staff welcomed a new member to the program in Jasmine Gayles from Seattle, Washington. Gayles brings UNC's recruiting class to six joining the five who signed during the early signing period.
"Jasmine is a great addition to our Bear family. She visited us this past fall and meshed really well with our team," Huth said. "She's played on high level teams and as a point guard, she's able to distribute, get the ball to the right people, hit the open three and loves to get after it. She's a bright young lady as well and wants to go into law and potentially study political science here at UNC!"
An attendee of West Seattle High School, the 5-9 point guard was a two-sport athlete playing soccer and basketball. She lettered all four years in basketball and three times in soccer. On the basketball court she helped her team to two district titles, a fourth place finish at state her junior season and sixth place as a senior. Gayles also collected some individual hardware during her career, being named All-League three times, All-State tournament twice and the 2017 West Seattle Player of the Year. Also a three-year team captain she excelled in the classroom by being in the National Honors Society.
Playing at the collegiate level is nothing new to the Gayles family as her grandpa, Leland Gayles Sr. played football at Arizona State and UCLA, her dad Leland Gayles Jr. played football at Arizona, Uncle Eddie played football at Stanford and cousin Akayla ran track at New York University.
While at Northern Colorado she will study to get into law work after graduating.
Gayles chose Northern Colorado over Brown, Pennsylvania, Montana, Air Force and Cal Poly.
Why Jasmine chose UNC?
A lot of things stood out to me but what really set UNC apart from anywhere else was the coaching staff. I appreciated how much they valued their players succeeding not only on the court but also in life. They are building a family at UNC, not just a basketball team- which is exactly what I was looking for in a school.
