Sunday's match against Portland State was a tight one for the UNC Men's Tennis team. The Bears came away with a 4-3 win over the Vikings, giving them 10 wins on the season and their best finish in the Big Sky Conference since 2016-17 with one more conference match remaining.
"I'm so proud of how our guys have handled these deciding 3-3 matches all year. They stayed calm and collected and execute with smart tennis," said UNC head coach Ben Gendron.
Portland State started the day by winning the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Kyle Pease/Tommy Smalley fell 6-3 in No. 1, and Adolfo Arroyo/Michael Kritzinger also lost 6-3 in No. 3. Julian Kenzlers/Nick Wade were tied 5-5 in the No. 2 doubles match that went unfinished.
The Vikings earned another two points with wins in the No. 2 and No. 4 spots in singles play, but the winning stopped there for PSU. Kyle Pease won in the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-4, and Julian Kenzlers followed that with a 6-0, 6-4 win on the No. 3 court.
Needing two wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, the Bears answered the call. With Nick Wade finishing up his win in two sets 6-0, 6-4 in No. 5, it was up to Tommy Smalley to win the day. After falling in the first set, Smalley rallied to make a comeback to take the final two sets in a very close duel, with the final score being 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5.
With the win today, the Bears have won five out of their last six matches and will have a busy day on April 18th with a double-header against the University of Nebraska-Omaha at 10 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. against the University of New Mexico.
UNC has only one conference match left and it's a critical one.
"We need a good week of practice to get ready for Sacramento St to keep our Big Sky playoff chances alive. We'll need some help from other teams along with getting a win in Sacramento," Gendron said.
