Bears tennis picks up second-straight win
3/31/2019 10:17:00 AM | Men's Tennis
At first glance, one might think it would be a tune-up match for the UNC Bears going up against a junior college team, but this wasn't just any JUCO program. The Seward Saints are the third-ranked JUCO men's tennis team in the nation and came to Greeley to give the Bears a challenge. However, UNC stepped up to the challenge and came out on top 4-3.
Doubles play started on the right note with Nick Wade/Julian Kenzlers earning a 6-1 win over Francisco Vargas/Carlo Izurieta on the No. 2 court. Seward evened things up getting a win on the No. 1 court with Gabriel Nery/Sander Jans taking a 6-1 win of their own over Kyle Pease/Tommy Smalley.
With the doubles point up for grabs, Adolfo Arroyo/Michael Kritzinger won a tough battle against Nicolas Rousset/Nyathi Motlojoa, clinching the point 6-4.
The momentum carried over into the singles matches for the Bears, taking the first two wins on the No. 3 and 4 courts. Julian Kenzlers was the first on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gabriel Nery in the No. 3 spot. Alex Exsted quickly followed that up with a win over Francisco Vargas 6-4, 6-4 in No. 4.
The Saints would not go down easy, grinding out wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, both ending in three sets. Nicolas Rousset defeated Kyle Pease 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Sander Jans narrowly won in a third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) over Adolfo Arroyo.
Needing just one win from the No. 5 or 6 spots to take the match over the Saints, Tommy Smalley answered the call with a win over Franck Soulerot 7-6 (3), 6-2 to earn the fourth team point. Nick Wade went a tough three-sets in No. 5, however Carlo Izurieta came out on top 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4).
Looking to keep the winning streak alive and go 2-0 on the weekend, the Bears will take on Colorado College Sunday at 2:30 PM in Greeley.
