Northern Colorado lost to Utah and Iowa State on day two of the Lopes Up Classic
PHOENIX, Ariz.- Northern Colorado softball dropped both of its games on Saturday, falling 7-0 to Utah and 7-3 to Iowa State. UNC's offense was not able to score enough runs and the pitchers could not keep the Utes and Cyclones off of the bases.
Bears vs. Utes
Valerie Vidal would start in the circle for game one, as the Bears faced Utah's Chantelle Ladner.
Through the first two innings, both pitchers put up zeroes on the scoreboard, with each team getting a single baserunner.
In the top of the third, Emma Brockmann was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Ladner was replaced in the circle by Jess Lynch.
After Katie Simonsgaard pinch ran for Brockmann, a Utah throwing error would allow Kenzie Kudrna to reach base and the Bears had runners at the corners. UNC was unable to bring home the runners and the game remained scoreless.
The Utes jumped ahead of the Bears in the bottom of the third after Alyssa Barrera hit a grand slam off of Vidal. Utah was now up 4-0 on UNC.
Now in the top of the fifth, UNC had another opportunity with singles from Cheyenne Talmadge and Madi Schmidt, but both were left on base.
Utah would add a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that put the deficit at 5-0 for the Bears. The Utes added two solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth to pad their lead over UNC.
The Bears had one last chance in the top of the seventh, but Utah closed out the game to get the win. The Utes used four different pitchers to combine for the shutout.
Vidal took the loss after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs.
Bears vs. Cyclones

Iowa State responded in the top of the seventh with a double that allowed to Cyclone runners to score. UNC was trailing 7-1 going to the final frame.
Madi Schmidt reached base to start the bottom of the seventh on an Iowa State error. Katie Simonsgaard had an infield single to put two on with nobody out. Vidal would help her own cause with an RBI double to score Schmidt. A ground out from Shaena
