UNC women's basketball falls late to Eastern Washington at the Big Sky Tournament
BOISE, Idaho – A last second shot and free throw from Jessi McDowell-White pushed Eastern Washington over Northern Colorado 59-57 in the Big Sky Semifinals on Wednesday night. The Bears had reclaimed the lead from EWU just four seconds before the game-winning basket and free throw on a Krystal Leger-Walker putback with seven seconds on the clock.
Northern Colorado got out to an early lead on Eastern Washington by shooting 41.2 percent and holding EWU to 28.6 percent shooting. Senior guard Savannah Smith scored 15 points for the team in the quarter as the team led 19-8.
Following the first quarter of play, the Eagles defense dug in and chipped away at the Northern Colorado lead. The first EWU run came after UNC built its largest lead of the game at 13 in the second quarter. Violet Kapri Morrow scored seven straight points to cut the lead to six. UNC took that six point lead to the break at 28-22.
Offensive woes continued in the third quarter for the Bears as they shot 18.8 percent in it with no made 3-pointers. EWU took its first lead since early in the game with a 10-0 run as the Bears were scoreless for over three minutes.
Holding the lead heading into the fourth quarter, Eastern Washington built it to as much as six multiple times including with 1:28 left in the game. Northern Colorado came storming back using offensive rebounding and getting to the free throw line. With one minute left, Alexis Chapman made a jumper to put the team down one.
Northern Colorado then forced a shot clock violation to gain possession for Leger-Walker's go-ahead basket.

Game notes
- Savannah Smith became the sixth player in Big Sky history to surpass the 2,000 career points mark. She finished the game with a game-high 20 points and sits at 2,009 for her career.
- Abby Kain followed up her career-night on Tuesday with another impressive performance on Wednesday. The junior forward grabbed 14 rebounds to go with seven points and a career-high four blocks.
- Northern Colorado once again controlled the glass with 47 rebounds compared to EWU's 35. The Bears grabbed 23 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points.
What's ahead
Northern Colorado will now have to sit and wait to see if their season will continue when the WNIT bracket comes out on Monday night.
