Northern Colorado men's golf earned its sixth top 10 finish of the season at the John Burns Intercollegiate
LIHUE, Hawaii – Northern Colorado men's golf picked up its sixth top 10 finish of the year on Saturday, taking eighth place at the John Burns Intercollegiate. UNC shot a 286 in the final round to conclude the tournament with a 5-under 859.
Joshua Matz had the best third round for the team, and a team-best individual round of the tournament shooting a 4-under 68. Matz birdied five holes on Saturday and ended up finishing tied for 30th individual with a 2-under 214.
Coby Welch had the best individual finish of the tournament with a 4-under 212. His score put him tied for 16th. In the final round, he's shot a 2-under 70 with three birdies.
Jack Castiglia was the only other Bear to finish even-par or better on Saturday with his second straight 72.
Li Chen and Nick Sharp each shot a 76 and 78, respectively in the final round.
Prenzlow's perspective
It was nice effort and desire to compete by the Bears! Coby (Welch) and Joshua (Matz) stood tall and really played well in this field. Our freshman Jack Castiglia really helped and made some critical shots down to the end. Li Chen and Nick Sharp put together some good rounds also. It feels great to beat some highly ranked teams but as I said to the guys, we can not feel that this is our signature event. We need to go home and work hard for our next event at Grand Canyon. This team is really talented and most certainly has a chance to be special as all the guys have a chance each tournament to play well!
What's ahead
The Bears are now off until mid-March when they travel to Phoenix to compete in the Grand Canyon Invitational over March 15 and 16.
