Allison Davis placed second in the long jump and the men's distance medley team set a program record on day two of the Big Sky Championships
BOZEMAN, Mont.- It was day two of the Big Sky Indoor Championships and Northern Colorado Track and Field found success across the board with another podium spot for the women and the men had strong performances in the qualifying events.
Allison Davis earned the silver medal in the women's long jump as she recorded a 5.90m jump, a personal best, in the finals.
"A great breakthrough came from Allison Davis in long jump," head coach Amanda Schick said. "She was a really high caliber long jumper in high school and then had a pretty severe injury her senior year. So I am so happy for her! She also moves to number three on the Top 10 all-performance list for long jump! I definitely think there's an advantage for her to have already competed yesterday. I think it's a misconception that she would be unexpected to perform better today."
In the men's distance medley relay, UNC's team broke a school record with a time of 10:19.46. Jeremy Romero, Evan Keely, Cameron Ross and Josh Campbell combined to break the record and place sixth. The previous record was set last season, with a time of 10:32.36, with Romero being a member of that team.
The men's 400m finals will be filled with Bears tomorrow, as three qualified for the event on Friday. Kyle Thomas recorded the fastest time in the preliminaries, with a 48.36-second performance to win his heat. Adam Stark was fourth in the qualifying event with a time of 48.72 seconds to win his heat. Alex Ayers earned the final spot after finishing eighth with time of 49.22 seconds, finishing third in Thomas' heat.
"On the men's side we did a good job advancing," Schick said. "All the sprint races will be exciting to watch tomorrow. The men's [Distance Medley Relay] broke the school record and finished sixth. It was an exciting race and I'm proud of those guys!"
Cammy Sargent looks to bring home some hardware in the women's 800m tomorrow after recording the second best qualifying time with a 2:13.58 seconds.
"I'm going into conference acting like it's any other meet and my strategy is to just go enjoy the race," Sargent said. "I think sometimes we, as runners, put too much pressure on ourselves because of our ranking or the size of the meet. We forget the most important thing, which is remembering the joy of racing and the people around us that made us want to run in the first place. I think remembering this is the key to running well."
Greg Laday qualified for the men's 60m with a 6.83-second time, good for sixth best in the preliminary race.
The UNC women will also be represented in the 60m finals, as Syanne Algee finished eighth with a time of 7.69 seconds, a personal best in the event.
"On the track, Syanne races her PR, which advanced her to the finals tomorrow," Schick said of Algree. "She's a great competitor so it will be a great final!"
Antoine Coates will look to get on the podium as he qualified in the men's 200m with a 22.25-second time to finish seventh overall.
Jalen Lyon set a personal best in the 60m preliminaries with time of 6.97 seconds. Deondre Ritter also earned a personal best in the 60m with a run of 7.02 seconds.
UNC women currently sit in a tie for ninth place with 10 points, along with Weber State. The men's team sits in 12th with three points.
"Tomorrow's a new day and we're still looking to put some points on the board," Schick added. "Among the final races that will be going on; we still have the triple jump and women's high jump with athletes going into scoring position. The 400 is going to come down to aggressiveness and position. We have to make sure that we're strategic where we need to be. Our guys know there is an expectation placed on them. This is what they train for and it's going to be fun."
Day 3
