Bears strike first, but see UC Davis take the doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. – After having opening day pushed back due to field conditions, UNC took on UC Davis in a pair of games on Saturday afternoon. The Bears struck first in each game but saw the Aggies come fighting back to sweep the double dip with 11-2 and 9-2 victories.
GAME 1
Jack Pauley got the first hit of the game and season with a single to center in the second. Tyler Yamaguchi doubled him in with his first knock of the 2019 campaign that put UNC up 1-0.
The game went to the fifth knotted at 1-1. UNC helped to spark a five-run inning for UC Davis with an error, wild pitch and they hit a batter. When all was said and done the Aggies led 6-1 and wouldn't look back.
A 2-out Yamaguchi single kept the inning alive for Quinn Ayers who smacked a single up the middle to drive in the Bears second run.
GAME 2
The combo of Pauley and Yamaguchi did the deed for the Bears again in Game 2 and once more in the second inning. Pauley led off with a rope double and was brought home one batter later by Yamaguchi. UNC went up 1-0 and saw the Aggies tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
After Davis scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth, UNC answered back with its first home run of the season courtesy of Matt Zoba. The Bears cut the lead to just 4-2, but UCD answered back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.
BREAKING OUT OF THE BOX SCORE
On the day,
- Yamaguchi went 3-for-6 with a double and 2 RBIs.
- Pauley was also 3-for-6 with a double and he scored a pair of runs.
- Zoba finished with the long ball.
SCHEDULE SAYS
The Bears will look to get in the win column for the first time when they close out the series Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
