Sadly, for the second time this month we have lost a significant member of the Bear family. Earlier this week, three-time UNC Hall of Fame inductee George Sage died at the age of 89 at his home in Greeley.
He was a pillar of the UNC athletic community as a star pitcher on the Bears 1955 College World Series team. He also served UNC as the head coach of the men's basketball team, where he still owns the best winning percentage in program history. As a coach, he won four league titles and his teams earned three NCAA appearances.
A longtime member of the UNC faculty, his contributions to UNC go far beyond anything he achieved on the field. He received the UNC Distinguished Scholar Award in 1987 and was selected as the Lucile Harrison Outstanding Teaching Award. He and his wife established the George and Liz Sage Endowed Scholarship, available to high achieving basketball and baseball student-athletes. In recognition of his service, the George Sage Scholar-Athlete Award is given annually to the senior male athlete with the highest GPA at UNC.
He published more than 50 articles and authored or co-authored 21 books, which earned him induction into the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Hall of Fame in 2006.
A celebration of his life will take place 2 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the Allnutt Macy Chapel located on 702 13th Street in Greeley. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the UNC men's basketball and baseball programs or the Guadalupe Community Center. Donations can be made at the Allnutt Funeral Service located at the same address or directly to the UNC Foundation online at www.unco.edu/give.
