UNC men's golf placed two in the top 5 and three in the top 15 to win the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invite
ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Northern Colorado men's golf team held off Middle Tennessee State to earn the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational championship on Tuesday. The Bears took the 36-hole event at the Sunbrook Golf Course by shooting a 572, one stroke ahead of MTSU.
Three Bears finished in the top 15 individually, including a pair in the top 5. Joshua Matz had the best finish for UNC by taking fourth with a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 after shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday. It is his first top 5 finish of the season and third top 10.
Freshman Jack Castiglia had the best day for the Bears shooting a 2-under 70, matching his best round of his career. The total of 142 earned him his first career top 5 finish by ending in a three-way tie for fifth.
Coby Welch was the other Bear to finish in the top 15, by ending up tied for 13th. Welch, who shot an opening round 70, finished at even-par for the 36 holes with a 144 overall after shooting 74 on Tuesday. Teammate Li Chen also shot a 74 on Tuesday as he finished with a 146 to be in a tie for 18th.
Nick Sharp and Marcus Tait shot a 75 and 80, respectively on Tuesday to finish in tied for 45th and 52nd.
The team win is the third since head coach Roger Prenzlow took over the program and first in a non-conference championship tournament.
Northern Colorado was one of three Big Sky schools playing in the tournament. Southern Utah finished fourth and Weber State ended up in ninth.
Prenzlow's Perspective
"It is always nice to find a way to win but boy for the most part today things were a struggle. Unlike yesterday the putts were not dropping at all today. Jack Castiglia was a pleasure today, he carried the load today shooting 70 and finishing tied for fifth in the tournament. Coby and Joshua had a few problems today but knowing them they will use this as an incentive to get out and work hard to play better the next tournament. Like I said yesterday, this team is really talented, if we keep getting better many good things will happen."
What's ahead
The Bears are back on the course next week when they travel to Hawaii to compete in the John A Burns Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament runs from February 21-23 at the Wailua Golf Club.
