UNC women's tennis continued to work its way through the non-conference schedule Friday afternoon with a visit from Metro State Denver. Led by senior No. 1 Anna Battersby the Bears made like an anvil to the Roadrunners to take the match, 6-1.
"We competed really hard against a great team today," said UNC head coach Chad Stoloff. "It was a challenge for us and good preparation for Denver on Sunday. I was happy to see us step up embrace the challenge and come together to battle all the way through."
There was no better sign of the battle than the No. 1 singles match that paired Battersby and Tabi Porter of MSU.
"I came into the match a little nervous because I knew how good of a player she is," said Battersby.
The nerves showed themselves in the form of intensity in the final set when the two top players went back-and-forth fighting through calls to have the Bears get the last call in a 6-4 and 6-2 victory.
"I thought I played well. She was really challenging and did a really good job of pushing me. I pulled through in the second set and really used my backhand down the line, which just happens to be my favorite shot," Battersby said.
One of the first singles matches to conclude went in favor of UNC in convincing fashion when Sandra Keta took care of Eliza McKean 6-1 and 6-1.
The other results from Friday are as follows:
SINGLES
Raffa Mora 6-3 and 6-4 over Rinsley Winterrowd.
Madeline Doherty 6-4 and 6-4 over Alex Pessoa.
Synclair Larson 6-2 and 6-2 over Olivia Kaiser.
Helena Steenberg 6-3 and 6-3 over Sarina Chhabra.
DOUBLES
Battersby and Doherty over Pessoa and McKean, 6-3.
Chhabra and Larson over Mackenzie Hotan and Kaiser, 6-3.
Mora and Keta vs. Porter and Steenberg was suspended at 4-4.
UNC will be back on the court Super Bowl Sunday at Denver University at 4 p.m.
