It had already been one heck of a senior year for Mariel Gutierrez. She racked up the awards for her play on the field including Big Sky Conference MVP and First Team All-Conference and her success wasn't limited to the playing field. She became the first UNC player to be named Scholar All-American, twice, and now by being named the 2018 Colorado Sportswoman of the Year for College Soccer, she has made it the first time Northern Colorado has had two Sportswomen of the Year winners.
"No one could imagine accomplishing all these things in a season or a career," said Gutierrez. "I am super excited and humbled to have earned such an honor. I wouldn't have been able to accomplish any of these great things without the help of my coaches and teammates throughout my entire career."
Gutierrez joins Savannah Smith of women's basketball to give UNC two winners for the first time.
"I just want people to know that when you combined hard work and discipline you can accomplish anything you want," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez won the honor due in large part to her leading the conference in points and goals. She leaves UNC as the leader in game-winning goals, shots and shots on goal and is second in career games played at the Division I level.
She graduated in December with a degree in business finance but isn't ready to give up on her soccer career just yet. She has plans on finding a team to play on this summer with the goal of going overseas to play next fall.
In addition to Smith and Gutierrez, Brooke Hodgson was named the Sportswoman of the Year for college softball with her performance at the University of Colorado Mesa and was recently added to the Bears softball coaching staff.
Gutierrez, Smith, Hodgson and all of the Sportswomen of Colorado award winners will be honored on Sunday, March 10 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center at 7 pm. For more information on the event, click here.
