UNC women's tennis faced some stiff competition at the GCU Invite
This past weekend the UNC women tennis team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to compete against reigning Big Sky champions Northern Arizona University and Grand Canyon University from the Western Athletic Conference. With Milena Belianovch and Raffa Mora out with injuries the team only traveled six to the tournament.
Day 1
UNC Women's tennis took on GCU in doubles on day one where no.1 pair Sandra Keta and Synclair Larson defeated GCU's top pair in Emilia Occhipinti and Celina Buhr in a competitive match 7- 5. In the no. 2 pairings Sarina Chhabra and Madison Wolfe competed hard but came out short against GCU's Ludovica Infantino and Martina Lo Pumo, 4-6.
Day 2
During the second day of competition UNC played in six singles matches against Grand Canyon, unable to pull out a win, but playing in some very competitive matches. Wolfe and Chhabra fell in three sets. Wolfe lost to GCU's Celia Morel 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (6) and Chhabra to Celina Buhr, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8).
Day 3
UNC competed in singles against defending Big Sky champions Northern Arizona on the final day of play and there sure was a lot of fight and sweat in these lengthy competitive matches as seen in the following results. However, none of them went UNC's way.
Adrianna Sosnowska (NAU) defeated Sandra Keta (UNC) 2-6, 6-3, 7-5
Elinor Beazley (NAU) defeated Synclair Larson (UNC) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Emilie Haakansson (Nau) defeated Madison Wolfe (UNC) 4-6, 6-3, 6-0
Quote Coach Stoloff
"The Grand Canyon tournament was a great opportunity for us to play in. Against NAU reigning Big Sky Conference champions and Grand Canyon who was seeded No.1 in the WAC last year. It was a tough competition. We battled, we had some great matches out there, we are learning, growing and becoming closer as a team. Overall, it was really beneficial for our team and program to play in this level of a tournament in this stage of the season."
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado continues its fall competition over the second weekend of November when they travel to the SDSU Invite hosted by San Diego State University in California.
