UNC volleyball extended its win streak to eight matches
CHENEY, Wash. – UNC volleyball made it eight straight wins on Saturday night with the sweep of Eastern Washington (25-21, 25-17, 25-19). The Bears defense was strong in the win holding EWU to .054 hitting for the match. Northern Colorado is now 21-7 on the year and 15-1 in the Big Sky.
Taylor Muff and Kailey Jo Ince reached double-figure kills with 13 and 11 each, while Lauren Hinrichs was one shy with nine. Hinrichs led the team with a .474 hitting percentage by not recording an attack error on the night. Ince had a strong hitting percentage as well at .308 on 26 swings.
Kendal Feather led the team with 17 digs. Taylor Els was the only other Bear with double-figure digs picking up 10. Els became the program's DI record holder for career aces with two on the night to pass Andrea Spaustat. She now has 104 for her career over Spaustat's 102.
Northern Colorado used a 4-0 run midway through the first set to separate themselves from the Eagles and were beneficiaries of two errors by EWU to end the set.
The second set was the best offensive set for UNC hit .286. Meanwhile, after hitting .200 in the first set, EWU dropped to .025 in the second set. After battling back and forth through most of the set the Bears dominated the end of it with a 7-1 run to go to the break up 2-0.
In the final set Northern Colorado held Eastern Washington to a -.056 attack percentage. With the negative attack percentage from the Eagles UNC went on runs of 8-0 and 6-1 to build a big lead. Despite a late 7-1 run from EWU, the Bears held strong to complete the sweep.
What They Said
Head Coach Lyndsey Oates
"We played well offensively at times and then we got a little too high error. We have to reduce those unforced errors as we prepare for the tournament including our service errors. Overall it was a good match for us. It was a tough match to prepare for with the quick turnaround and team that's feisty and playing for their season. I thought we handled it with maturity and were able to get out of there in three by making some good decisions late in sets one and three."
Game Notes
- The .054 attack percentage is the second-lowest UNC has held an opponent this year. The other also came against EWU when they hit .000 when they played in Greeley in October.
- Daisey Schultz recorded 31 assists on the night.
- The eight straight conference match win streak is the longest since UNC joined the Big Sky in 2006. The previous was seven in 2010.
