SPOKANE, WASH.– UNC men's tennis capped off their Fall season with a trip to the Pacific Northwest this past weekend, competing in the Gonzaga Invite against a field of teams that included Gonzaga, Portland, and Seattle, as well as Big Sky opponents Idaho, Montana, and Montana State.
The Bears had a strong showing in doubles play, with two pairings advancing to the finals of their respective draws. Kyle Pease/John Giesberts took wins over Seattle and Montana before falling in the final draw to Portland 8-5.
Adolfo Arroyo/Nick Wade started hot with a sweep over Idaho 8-0 and continued the momentum to take home a win in their doubles draw by defeating Montana State 8-4 in the finals.
In singles play, Julian Kenzlers was victorious in the consolation draw where in the finals he defeated Montana State in a tight three-set match 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5).
Coach Ben Gendron had this to say about the conclusion of the Fall season,
"We had a good weekend up at Gonzaga. Our doubles was strong as we saw 2 of our teams in the finals of their respective draws. Congrats to Nick and Adolfo for 1st place in their draw! The results we had in doubles were great but it was not a surprise. The work they have put into doubles play has showed the entire Fall season. We played well in singles, but still need to clean up a few things and keep improving on our mental game. The guys had a very successful Fall season and now it's time to get back to work to be fully prepared for January."
The Bears will be back in action in January for the beginning of their Spring season.
