Northern Colorado women's basketball begins a three-game road trip Saturday at Idaho
The last time Northern Colorado and Idaho women's basketball met the stakes were big, really big, a trip to the NCAA Tournament was on the line. UNC ended up winning that game in convincing 91-69 for the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and Big Sky Tournament title. The Bears look to repeat that success on Saturday when they travel to Moscow for the first time the two teams have played since last March.
Idaho enters the 2018-19 Big Sky season as the preseason favorite and will look to defend their home court against UNC at 3 pm MST. The game starts a three-game road trip for Northern Colorado.
Opening Tip
• Northern Colorado started the Big Sky season by going 2-0 at home defeated Sacramento State, 82-69 and Portland State, 79-63.
• Four Bears scored in double-figures in the game led by Micayla Isenbart's 21 off the bench. Alexis Chapman (19), Savannah Smith (15) and Bridget Hintz (12) joined her.
• Krystal Leger-Walker and Savannah Smith combined for 17 of UNC's 18 assists in the game.
• Ali Meyer stretched her streak of consecutive double-digit rebound games to nine, with 15 against the Vikings.
• Idaho started the 2018-19 Big Sky season on the road defeating Idaho State and Weber State.
• UI played Eastern Washington on Thursday night, winning 84-68.
• The Vandals have the Big Sky Preseason Player of the Year on their team in Micayla Ferenz. She is averaging 21.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists this season. In conference play, she is scoring 23.3 per contest.
Last Time Out
The Bears used a balanced offensive attack against Portland State's 2-3 zone to improve to 2-0 in the Big Sky with a 79-63 win. Four Bears scored in double figures led by Micayla Isenbart's 21 points. UNC shot 40.3 percent from the field and made 13 3-pointers in the win.
Scouting the Vandals
Idaho came into the season with the target on their back as the favorites in the Big Sky Conference. UI is led by the sharp-shooting duo of Micayla Ferenz and Taylor Pierce. The two have combined to score 38.3 points a game for Idaho this season.
Ferenz, the Big Sky Preseason Player of the Year, is coming off a Big Sky Player of the Week performance against Idaho State and Weber State last week, before putting up 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists against Eastern Washington on Thursday night. Pierce led UI with 30 points against EWU, including making eight 3-pointers.
The Vandals are once again a good outside shooting team this year leading the Big Sky with 10.2 3-pointers a game in 3-point percentage at 34.7 percent.
History against Idaho
Northern Colorado and Idaho had never faced each other until the Vandals returned to the Big Sky in the 2014-15 season. Since then, UNC leads the series 5-2 going 2-1 both at home and in Moscow. The last time the two teams met was in the Big Sky Title game in Reno, Nevada last year, which Northern Colorado won 91-69.
Against the Big Sky
UNC joined the Big Sky in the 2006-07 season and has gone 126-99. Overall, the team is 138-137 against Big Sky schools.
Around the Big Sky
UNC was the lone team not to play on Thursday night as they saw Idaho and Montana each improve to 3-0 in conference play with wins over Eastern Washington and Sacramento State, respectively. Portland State and Northern Arizona each earned their first win of the conference season.
