DENVER – Savannah Smith has a long list of accomplishments next to her name, 2018 Big Sky Regular Season MVP, 2018 Big Sky Tournament MVP, two-time first team All-Big Sky selection, four-time College Sports Madness Big Sky Player of the Week, two-time Ready Nutrition Big Sky Player of the Week, and now the 2018 Sportswomen of Colorado College Basketball Award Winner.
"I am very honored and humbled to receive this award from Sportswomen of Colorado. Thank you! Just being mentioned alongside of the many amazing Colorado sportswomen that have won this award before me is a huge honor. Thank you to all my coaches, family, and teammates who encouraged me and helped me play to the best of my ability!"
Smith's outstanding 2018 stood out to the committee to earn the second ever honor for the UNC women's basketball program, joining former teammate D'shara Strange who won in 2016. During the calendar year of 2018, Smith earned the Big Sky MVP award by averaging 18.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals. Her performance helped bring the program its first outright Big Sky regular season championship.
Her stellar performance didn't end there, as she went on to be the MVP of the Big Sky Tournament in which UNC punched its ticket to its first NCAA Tournament. Over the three games, Smith broke the tournament's record for points scored with 78 points, including a 34 point championship game. She shot 43.3 percent from the field and 34.6 percent in the tournament to go with her 26.0 points, 5.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds.
So far during her senior season, Smith is averaging 19.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals as the Bears are 13-6 overall and atop the Big Sky standings against at 8-2. Smith continues to put her name in the UNC record book, starting the season by making a single-game best eight 3-pointers at Colorado. She currently sits in first place in career made 3s with 242 and currently third in all-time scoring with 1,656 points.
Smith, along with all the Sportswomen of Colorado award winners will be honored on Sunday, March 10 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center at 7 pm. For more information on the event, click here.
