D'shara Strange earned the Colorado Sportswomen Award
DENVER, Colo.—Former Northern Colorado women's basketball player D'shara Strange earned the special honor of being named a 2016 Sportswomen of Colorado Award Winner on Tuesday. Strange earned the honor for her performance during the 2014-15 season.
"It is such an honor to be considered as one of Colorado's top female athletes by such an amazing organization," Strange said. "It is an honor that I would not have been able to receive without the support from my family, teammates, coaches and the UNC community."
In that season she helped UNC earn a berth to the WNIT and advancing to the third round of the tournament along with helping lead the team to a program record 22 wins. Individually, she was named the co-Big Sky MVP having finished the season averaging 16.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.9 steals a game.
She not only had a tremendous season with the Bears, but also solidified herself as one of the best to come through the program. By the end of the season she was the school's leader in points (1,891), rebounds (1,039), field goals made (704) and steals (346). She became just the first player in Northern Colorado history to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in her career. While at the University she also earned both her bachelor's and master's degree as well.
"The University of Northern Colorado and its Department of Athletics are very proud of D'shara's accomplishment on and off the court as it's a testament to her hard work and passion for basketball," Athletic Director Darren Dunn said. "This is a very deserving honor to a great person who made a tremendous impact while she was a student-athlete at UNC.
