UNC women's basketball hits the halfway point of the Big Sky season hosting Northern Arizona
After making the quick trip Cedar City to pick up a win over Southern Utah, Northern Colorado women's basketball returns home for a game against Northern Arizona at 2 pm.
Opening Tip
• UNC rebounded from a slow start and dominated defensively to defeat Southern Utah on the road 71-44 Thursday night.
• Savannah Smith led the team with 19 points, and added in six assists.
• Ali Meyer put together her third double-double of the season scoring a career-high 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
• The Bears dominated the paint against SUU, outscoring the Thunderbirds 48-4.
• Northern Arizona has been struggling as of late falling in 10 of their past 11 games. The lone win came against Weber State.
• The Bears and Lumberjacks have a pair of common non-conference opponents in SMU and Colorado State. UNC went 2-0 against that duo, while NAU went 0-2.
Last Time Out
Northern Colorado took care of business on the road in a 71-44 win over Southern Utah on Thursday night. Despite a slow start offensively, UNC ended up outshooting SUU 46.9 percent to 26.0. The Bears held the Thunderbirds to only three made field goals in the second half. Savannah Smith led the team with 19 points, while Ali Meyer scored a career-high 15 points on her way to a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Scouting the Lumberjacks
Northern Arizona comes into Saturday afternoon's game on a four game losing streak and losers of 10 of their last 11 games. The lone win game against Weber State at home at the beginning of January. NAU started the season strong with a 4-1 record before falling off recently.
Second-year head coach Loree Payne looks to get her team back on track behind the trio of Kaleigh Paplow, Khiarica Rasheed and Lauren Orndoff. The trio is averaging 14.9, 11.1 and 10.1 points per game this year this season. Paplow also leads NAU in rebounds (7.6) and assists (3.6).
Teams are averaging 72.4 points a game against Northern Arizona on the season and 74.4 in Big Sky play.
History against Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona have met a total of 25 times over the year with the Bears leading the series 20-5. During it, UNC holds winning streaks of nine, four (2x) and three in it. Northern Colorado is currently on a four-game win streak over the Lumberjacks and 10-3 overall when playing against NAU in Greeley.

It was all chalk on Thursday in the conference as the top half of the league defeated the bottom half of the league. The lone change in the standings is Montana State broke its tie with Montana for fifth place as the Bobcats improved to 5-3 in conference play while UM fell to 4-4.

Playing on January 26 has not always been the best for UNC as they are 5-8 on the date. The good news is the Bears are 5-2 when playing at home on the date though, including most recently hosting Northern Arizona in 2017 and winning 75-64.
What's ahead
Northern Colorado will take over a week off from games as they do not play against until February 4 at Montana State. The Bears and Bobcats will tip-off at 6 pm in Bozeman. UNC is looking to avenge an earlier loss to MSU this season.
The team's next home game is set for Valentine's Day when Eastern Washington comes to the Bank of Colorado Arena.
