UNC women's basketball returns to the road on Thursday at Southern Utah
After staying at home for the past week and a half, Northern Colorado women's basketball returns to the road on Thursday night. The Bears travel to Southern Utah to take on the Thunderbirds at 6:30 pm. UNC looks to stay atop the Big Sky Conference in the game coming in at 6-2, a game behind Portland State for first.
Opening Tip
• Northern Colorado came away with a hard-fought 60-56 win over Idaho State to close out a three-game homestand last Saturday.
• Savannah Smith's 12-of-12 from the free throw line were key in the win as she led the team with 20 points.
• Bridget Hintz finished the homestand with a steady 9.3 points a game and 6.3 rebounds.
• The Bears shot 43.5 percent from the field against the Bengals.
• Southern Utah is looking to snap a two-game losing streak after back to back overtime wins in Big Sky play.
• The Bears and Thunderbirds have a pair of common opponents in the non-conference season in BYU and Denver.
Last Time Out
It came down to the final 1.8 seconds against Idaho State as Savannah Smith drew a charge against the Bengals and a technical foul helped lift UNC over ISU 60-56. The Smith shot a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line on her way to 20 points. The Bears had a good night shooting with a 43.5 field goal percentage.
Scouting the Thunderbirds
Southern Utah is under the first year of leadership from Tracy Sanders. The T-Birds have come up with some big wins, including defeating BYU at home in the non-conference season. Entering Thursday night's game SUU is 5-11 overall and 2-5 in the Big Sky, with both Big Sky wins coming in overtime.
Opponents are outscoring Southern Utah 69.8-62.5 this season and shooting 45.3 percent from the field against them. Teams are able to grab rebounds against SUU as well who has a -4.9 rebound margin.
On the offensive side of the court, Harley Hansen and Breanu Reid lead the team in scoring with 12.8 and 10.6 points, respectively. Reid also averages 3.0 assists per game.
History against Southern Utah
Until Southern Utah joined the Big Sky in the 2012-13 season, UNC and SUU had only met on previous time in 1980 with the Bears winning 92-61. Northern Colorado leads the series overall at 8-4, including a current six-game win streak.
Against the Big Sky
UNC joined the Big Sky in the 2006-07 season and has gone 122-94. Overall, the team is 135-100 against Big Sky schools.
Around the Big Sky
With a full slate of games in the Big Sky last Saturday it was a day of moving and shaking in the standings. The two biggest results came from the state of Montana, as UM hosted and defeated Idaho 82-79 while Montana State fell to Eastern Washington 89-87. At the end of the night, Portland State now sits in first place in the Big Sky at 5-1, while UNC is second at 6-2.

January 24th has been a good day for UNC women's basketball as they are 11-3 overall. The Bears are 4-2 on the road on the date.
