VERMILLION, SD. – Northern Colorado was in complete control of its match against South Dakota on Sunday morning, but on two separate occasions the Coyotes broke out and found the back of the net. Despite being outshot, 15-3, USD was able to overcome the lack of chances and come away with a 2-1 win.
With just over six minutes to play, UNC was in full attack mode, like they were for the majority of the match, however, USD was able to gain control and break downfield. Abby Ostrem found herself at the top left of the box and was able to loft a shot that ended up in the top right corner of the net for what turned out to be the game winner.
In what is just the latest example of sports being unfair, UNC had taken 10 more shots than South Dakota but found themselves down, 1-0. USD was on a rare attack when UNC stepped in and broke up the potential scoring chance and headed the opposite direction. The ball made its way to Taylor Bray who found Mariel Gutierrez cutting through the middle of the box and hit her in stride for what ended up being her first goal of the season and tied the match at, 1-1.
In the first 25 minutes, Northern Colorado had three shots on goal and a pair of corner kicks, while USD had a combined total of zero. The Yotes first shot came nearly 30 minutes into the match and broke the scoreless tie.
In addition to her goal, Gutierrez had three other shots, all were on goal.
Courtney Elterman dominated the opening half on the way to four shots of her own including a pair that got on goal.
The loss dropped UNC back under the .500 mark early in the season, they will look to even their record again when they host Wyoming on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
