Jenny Huth starts to build her coaching staff with the hiring of Kelly Packard
GREELEY, Colo. – Jenny Huth started building her coaching staff Tuesday with the introduction of Kelly Packard as one of her assistant coaches. Packard brings over 20 years of experience as a player and coach to UNC.
"Kelly brings a tremendous amount of experience to our staff inclusive of her years as a head coach. She will serve as our Recruiting Coordinator, Post Coach as well as Offensive Coordinator," Huth said. "Kelly has a very genuine spirit and connects with people extremely well. Having coached at the NAIA, NCAA and professional levels, she understands the critical elements of coaching that are necessary to succeed. We are excited about the wealth of knowledge she brings into our already well established Bears program."
Huth and Packard have crossed paths before when Packard was the head coach of the NWBL's Colorado Chill which Huth played on. She served as the head coach from 2004-06 winning the NWBL championship in both 2005 and 2006.
Packard most recently was the head coach at Taylor University from 2013-16, going 47-52 over that time, including bringing in the Freshman of the Year all three seasons at the helm.
Prior to Taylor, Packard served as the head coach at Ball State University from 2008-12. As the head coach of the Cardinals, Packard went 58-68 over her four seasons. In her first year as the head coach at BSU, she helped lead the team to its best season in program history with a 26-9 record leading to its first conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. In the NCAA tournament the Cardinals made plenty of noise, handing the historic Tennessee Lady Volunteers its first and only loss to date in the first round. Packard's work in her first year at Ball State earned her the 2009 Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year award.
In the 1990s Packard had a pair of stints at Colorado State as an assistant coach from 1991-93 and 1996-99. In Fort Collins, she coached Becky Hammon and the 1999 Colorado State team that won 33 games and reached the Sweet 16, both program bests.
Before becoming a coach Packard played at Anderson University in Indiana where she finished as the program's all-time scorer and rebounder and was introduced into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. She earned her degree in mass communications from Anderson.
Packard and her husband, Rich, have been married for 28 years. Rich is an electrical engineer for Intel, in Fort Collins. They have two sons.
