Chhabra and Blanchard Win for the Bears in Doubles
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Bears fell 7-0 to the University of North Dakota in women's tennis Saturday afternoon at Choice Health and Fitness Center. The Bears took a set in doubles, but were largely overwhelmed in singles leading to less than desirable results in the later stages of the competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In doubles, the Bears and Fighting Hawks played three close sets. Carrigan Blanchard and Sarina Chhabra teamed to defeat Zahra Finnigan and Masha Lobanova 7-5 at No. 3 but Anna Battersby and Raffa Mora lost 6-4 at No. 1 and Tristen Bryant-Otake and Madeline Doherty also lost 6-4 at No. 2.
In singles competition, the No. 1 matchup featured UNC Soph. Raffa Mora against UND Fr. Carmen Palumbo. Palumbo did just enough to win both sets 6-3 to take the win. Mana Koitabashi forced a third set super-tiebreak at No. 5 singles for the Bears but could not overcome Jr. Zahra Finnigan and fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.
North Dakota won the rest of the singles matches in straight sets although Carrigan Blanchard did earn a first set tiebreaker at No. 6 against Fr. Jaylee Yasanaga.
COACH COMMENTS
"I felt the team responded well to the changes in the doubles lineup," said Asst. Coach Marissa Baca. "There was good energy with each team and they competed hard. Raffa and Mana both competed hard today and fought to the very end."
UP NEXT
The Bears (5-11, 1-7 Big Sky) move on to play Montana on April 14 and Montana State on April 15. Both matches are away from home. They have six matches remaining in the regular season, three against conference opponents. North Dakota (6-10, 3-5 Big Sky) moves on to play Northern Arizona on April 13.
