BOZEMAN, Mont.- The top of the singles lineup proved too strong for the Bears in men's tennis Sunday and Montana State defeated Northern Colorado 5-2 in Bozeman. The Bobcats gained the early advantage by taking the team doubles point, thanks to a tiebreaker win at No. 2 by Kasper Parlklo and Adrian Torrico over UNC's Kyle Pease and Nick Wade. In singles, Montana State took positions one through three and tacked on No. 6 to add to their point total.
"We had several match points in doubles to get the team doubles point and could not capitalize," said Bears head coach Ben Gendron. "That swung the momentum going into singles."
The two teams played competitive sets in all six singles matchups. Cassell King came up short at No. 6 for the Bears and was defeated in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 by Max Petrak. Then Kyle Pease lost a pair of set tiebreakers to fall 7-6, 7-6 at No. 2 to Kasper Parlklo. Connor Finerty went down against Rok Sitar at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3 to seal the win for Montana State, who had a 4-0 lead.
The best singles performance for the Bears came at No. 5. Alex Exsted split sets with Marcus Ceolin but came up with an emphatic 6-1 score to take the third and final set.
"A big shout out goes to Alex (Exsted) for going 2-0 on the day," Gendron said. "He has been reliable all year. He does the right things every day on and off the court. He plays with so much heart and passion and never gives up."
Exsted improved his season singles record to 13-8 with the win over Montana State and has played between No. 4 and No. 6 in the lineup this spring.
"His mental toughness is outstanding. It has been the little things that do not have anything to do with tennis shots that have allowed him to go out and have such a successful season."
The Bears (10-12, 1-9 Big Sky) have been eliminated from post-season contention but can still finish with an even overall record this spring if they can pick up wins in their final two matches. They will play Minnesota Moorhead on April 21 at 2:00 p.m., then North Dakota on April 22. Both are road duels.
