Spring Match 14

GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears begin a six-match road swing this week with contests against two Big Sky opponents. The Bears will play Southern Utah on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. followed by Northern Arizona on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The Bears (4-8, 1-4 Big Sky) are past the mid-point of the season and are still looking to pick up steam in the conference standings.
LAST TIME OUT
The Weber State Wildcats used consistent, aggressive play to defeat the Bears in women's tennis 7-0 Saturday morning in Greeley at UNC campus tennis courts. The Wildcats got off to a fast start by winning No. 1 and No. 2 doubles in just 26 minutes. Later in singles, Weber State took down Northern Colorado in straight sets at every position except No. 1. Before Weber State, the Bears defeated Colorado Mesa 5-2 and Portland State 4-3.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDS (8-7, 1-3 Big Sky)
Southern Utah had their four-match winning streak snapped last weekend when they were defeated by Northern Arizona in a close contest 4-3. The match was played in windy conditions and the Thunderbirds were able to pickup singles wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6. They also were winners at No. 2 doubles.
The team is made up of three seniors, two juniors, zero sophomores, and four freshmen. Ghita Nassik, a junior from Mohammedia, Morrocco plays No. 1 singles and has a 6-4 record at that spot. Zoe Tanti and Eira Tobrand have split duties at No. 2 and are a combined 6-5. As a team, Southern Utah is 46-37 in all singles competition. They still have room for improvement in doubles and stand at 17-21 overall. Nassick has been paired with Daniella Cozzi most often at No. 1 and the duo is 3-7.
Last season, the Thunderbirds narrowly beat the Bears 4-3 in Greeley. Anna Battersby won in doubles in the match and Raffa Mora was a winner playing No. 5 singles at the time. Both teams will feature vastly different lineup in 2018, which makes the outcome less predictable.
Rose Ketmayura coaches Southern Utah. She is in her first year with the team but has two years of head coaching experience at Long Island University.
SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS (11-3, 6-0 Big Sky)
The Bears have an opportunity to take down the last undefeated team in the Big Sky when they play Northern Arizona on Sunday. It will likely not be easy however, as the Lumberjacks have won their last three, besting Southern Utah (4-3), Idaho (4-3), and Eastern Washington (5-2).
A big reason for success this season has been team doubles play. Overall, they are 24-11 in doubles matches and the duo of Ellie Millard and Cora-Lynn Von Durgen remain undefeated at No. 1 with a 6-0 record. Soph. Chiara Tomasetti plays the No. 1 singles position and is 5-2.
The last time the Lumberjacks lost a regular season conference match was Feb. 7, 2016 to Eastern Washington. They have perennially finished in the top four in the Big Sky for more than ten years running.
ELSEWHERE IN THE BIG SKY
Northern Arizona (6-0), Idaho (4-1), Eastern Washington (3-1), and Weber State (4-2) round out the top four teams in the Big Sky standings. The Bears (1-4) have ground to make up and sit in eleventh place ahead of Portland State.
Idaho's Maria Tavares helped her team notch two wins to earn her second Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week award in as many weeks. Taveres went undefeated in singles and doubles last week.
