Northern Colorado baseball had a big day at the ballpark with 35 runs against Regis
UNC's Dean Lawson and Evan Johnson both accumulated six hits in the game, and Lawson broke the program record for doubles in a single-game with six.
How it Happened
Northern Colorado actually trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first, but that would be the last time they trailed. UNC loaded the bases as Lawson led off the bottom of the first with his first of four doubles. Evan Johnson, later on, brought home the first two of 35 runs with a two-run RBI single through the right side. With the inning looking to be close to over, the Bears made Regis work for the final out. It all began with a Brett Minnick double to center field scoring two more runs making it 4-1. The two-out rally continued as UNC scored 11 runs on five hits and five walks. By the time the inning ended UNC led 13-1.
Regis chipped away at Northern Colorado with seven runs over the second and third to make it 13-8 through two and a half innings. The Rangers never cut the lead below five after that, as UNC scored two in the third and fourth and four in the fifth. Highlights during those innings included a Matt Burkart two-run home run and Lawson with another double to clear the bases which were loaded.
The Bears offense erupted for nine more runs in the sixth inning. Evan Johnson led off the inning with a single to center for his fourth hit of the game, to get the inning going, Johnson later came home on a Payton Tapia double to left in his first at-bat of the game following being a defensive substitution in the top of the sixth. UNC ended up loading the bases with two outs when Billy Moreland stepped to the plate. The Bears sophomore entered the game as a pinch-runner earlier in the inning and showed off his pop with a grand slam over the left-center fence to make it 30-8. Northern Colorado added five more on in the seventh to end up four shy of the school's record for runs in a game.
Game Changer
Dean Lawson was in a groove on Tuesday. The Bears second baseman went 6-for-7 at the plate with four doubles, a triple a single and a walk. He scored six times and drove in three runs. It was not just Lawson who had a day at the plate, but Evan Johnson as well went 6-for-7 with a double and five singles. He led the team with six RBI and also scored six times.
Stat to Know
For the fourth time in school history, Northern Colorado scored 30 or more runs. The 35 runs that crossed the plate on Tuesday are the second most in school history behind only the 39 vs Colorado School of Mines in 1961.
