Northern Colorado dropped its series opener to GCU 18-1 Thursday
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado baseball dropped its conference home-opener on Thursday afternoon to preseason favorite Grand Canyon 18-1 at Jackson Field. GCU used the combination of stringing together hits and a big pitching performance from starter Jake Wong.
How it Happened
Grand Canyon came out and attached Northern Colorado right away as leadoff hitter Austin Bull earned a four pitch walk and scored when right fielder Quin Cotton started his big day with a double down the left field line into the corner. The Lopes threatened to score more runs in the inning, but starter Isaac Bracken and the Bears held GCU to just the one run.
In the second, Grand Canyon's first four batters reached safely to spark a four-run rally. Between the string of batters reaching base and aggressive base running, the lead increased to 5-0 with four hits and an error.
While GCU continued to add runs on the board including four in the third and three in the fifth, the Bears offense struggled to string anything together. Starter Jake Wong retired 13 straight UNC batters from the second through the sixth inning.
Trailing 18-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Northern Colorado faced one last chance to extend the game. Jack Pauley doubled with one-out to try and spark a rally, Following Evan Johnson being hit by a pitch, Tyler Yamaguchi singled to left center scoring Pauley. That would end up being the lone run UNC scored in the game.
Game Changer
While Jake Wong shut down the Bears offense, Quin Cotton was doing a good amount of work at the plate. Cotton went 5-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. Only one of his five hits was for extra bases.
Stat to Know
It was a complete game for Grand Canyon all around, recording 18 hits and allowing just four Bears to reach base.
Game Notes
- The three-hit day for UNC is the lowest hit total for the team this season. It also snapped a streak of eight straight games with 10 plus hits.
- Jack Pauley had two of the team's three hits with a single and a double. He also scored the team's lone run of the game.
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado and Grand Canyon continue its series at 1 pm tomorrow at Jackson Field. The game moved up from 2 pm because of the men's basketball game against UIC at 5 pm for the CIT championship.
