@UNCO_WTennis Falls Well Short Against Eagles

GREELEY, Colo. -Northern Colorado could not muster a point against Eastern Washington in women's tennis, falling 7-0 at Work Out West Fitness Center on Friday afternoon. The Eagles started strong by winning all three doubles matches. They followed up doubles with a strong performance in singles as well.
Eastern Washington's No. 1 singles player, Janaya Smith was as good as advertised, beating Raffa Mora in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. In the match, Smith had no issues dealing with Mora's pace of shot and was generating winners primarily off the forehand wing throughout. No. 2 singles was next to finish as Rylee Braedan dispatched Tristen Bryant-Otake 6-3, 6-2.
With a 3-0 lead in the team score, the Eagles clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles. Zoey Nelson was tested early by UNC Jr. Anna Battersby, but she was able to withstand the first set tiebreaker and then ran away with the second set.
"There was a lot of excitement, preparation and hype heading into today's match, but unfortunately that did not translate into game day," said Bears head coach Brenda Gallegos. "A score does not always depict how a match goes but today's loss indicates that we clearly didn't show up today."
With the team match already decided, Mana Koitabashi played a competitive match at No. 6 against Eastern Washington's Rachel Swindell. Blanchard dropped the first set 7-5, but bounced back to take the second 7-5 before falling in a super-tiebreaker played in lieu of a third set.
"I know the team can compete better and I believe they will turn around very quickly. We still have another match this weekend (Sunday) and a ton more matches this spring to turn things around and get the outcome and we desire."
The Bears (2-5, 0-3 Big Sky) return to action Sunday when they play Omaha (5-6, 0-0 Conf.) at 10:00 a.m. The Eagles improved to (4-5, 1-0 Big Sky) and are scheduled to face North Dakota on March 4.
