GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears (1-2, 0-0) return home Saturday to begin a five-match homestand. UNC will play Metropolitan State and then Sacramento State on Sunday. The homestand will include three Big Sky Conference opponents, including the aforementioned Sacramento State Hornets along with Idaho and Eastern Washington. It will be a good chance for the Bears to rack up wins in Greeley before heading on the road for seven of their final nine matches of the regular season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears last played on Jan. 28, when they lost to Wyoming 6-1 in Laramie. Mana Koitabashi won her singles match at No. 6 to give the Bears their only point. She defeated Myiah Scott 7-6(3), 6-1. Tristen Bryant-Otake and Raffa Mora were also able to win in doubles at No. 1 against Tessa Van Der Ploeg and Elisa Koonik 7-5.
Anna Battersby was out of the lineup for UNC, so Raffa Mora played No. 1 singles and nearly bested Magdalena Stencil. She fell in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.
A day before the Wyoming match, the Bears were defeated by the Colorado Buffs in Greeley 7-0. This time the Bears were unable to secure a doubles win and lost in straight sets in singles at every position.
SCOUTING THE ROADRUNNERS (4-3, 0-0 Conf.)
The Roadrunners roster is made up of three seniors, zero juniors, three sophomores, and one freshman. In the fall, they picked up wins against Fort Hays State (7-2), Texas Permian-Basin (7-2), Dixie State (7-2), and Colorado Mesa (9-0). They fell to Air Force (7-0) in their only match so far this spring.
So. Tabitha Porter plays No. 1 singles for the Roadrunners. Last season, she went 22-5 in singles playing a split of No. 1 and No. 2. She was also given the distinction of ITA Rookie of the Year as well as RMAC Player of the Year for 2017.
Courtney Wright is expected to play No. 2 and has a 3-1 record in 2018. As a team, Metropolitan State is 11-4 in doubles competition. They are coached by Barrett Elkins.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS (1-3, 1-0 Conf.)
Sacramento State comes to Greeley on the heals of a close loss to Nevada 4-3 on Feb. 3. They will play Colorado on Feb. 10 and then travel to play UNC the following morning.
Sr. Ana Loaiza Esquivas was named Big Sky Player of the Week on Jan. 31 after going 3-1 in two road matches against Minnesota and North Dakota. Her win in singles against North Dakota clinched the match for the Hornets. She has won the award four previous times.
The Hornets young roster is made up of one senior, one junior, two sophomores, and three freshmen. Head Coach Cami Hubbs is in her first year. The Hornets went 9-17 a year ago, but 7-4 in the Big Sky Conference.
