Work Out West Fitness Center, Greeley, Colo.
GREELEY, Colo. - The Bears (4-3, 0-1) will finish their six-match homestand this weekend when they take on Big Sky foes Eastern Washington and Idaho. The Bears play the Eagles on Feb. 17 at 11:30 and then Idaho on Feb. 18 at 2:00 p.m. Both matches are an opportunity for UNC to get their first conference win of the spring. It will also be important for the Bears to pick up wins at home now because they play 7 of their next 8 matches on the road started with Seattle University on Feb. 23.
LAST TIME OUT
Northern Colorado suffered losses to Sacramento State and the University of Utah over last weekend. The Hornets defeated the Bears 5-2 on Friday but UNC received wins in singles from Kyle Pease at No. 2 and Tommy Smalley at No. 5, avoiding the shutout the Bears suffered last season against Sacramento State.
Kyle Pease was particularly impressive in his win over Dom Miller 6-2, 7-6(5). Pease's forehand groundstroke game has been rolling on all cylinders lately, giving opponents big problems trying to keep up with the pace of that shot. Pease was also the UNC player closest to beating Utah. He lost to Slava Shainyan in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Kyle Pease teamed with Tommy Smalley at No. 2 doubles and the duo was leading Egbert Weverink and Joe Wooley (Utah) 4-3 when the team doubles point was decided and the match was cut short.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES (4-2, 1-0 Conf.)
After losing their first two matches of the season, the Eagles have gone on a four match winning streak heading into this weekend. Their last three wins came at home against Montana State (5-2), Whitworth (7-0), and Seattle University (4-3). They also defeated The Citadel (4-3) on the road.
Senior Scott Paz was tabbed Big Sky Player of the Week on Jan. 31 and has continued his strong play since. Last weekend, Paz went undefeated, winning all-six combined singles and doubles matches. He is 4-1 at No. 1 singles and 5-1 at No. 1 doubles playing alongside teammate Flavien Raveau.
The Eagles have a veteran lineup which consists of four seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and two freshmen. Fourth year Head Coach Steve Clark has consistently started Paz at No. 1 singles, but the rest of the lineup has been largely unpredictable.
The Bears lost to Eastern Washington last season in Cheney, Wash. 5-2. However, current Bears Kyle Pease and Cassell King were both winners in singles in that match. Kyle Pease and Connor Finerty won playing No. 1 doubles as well.
SCOUTING THE VANDALS (0-3, 0-0 Big Sky)
The Vandals record suggests they have had a rough beginning of 2018, but their strength of schedule would suggest they may be better than their record shows. The Vandals have road losses to Oregon (7-0), Gonzaga (7-0), and the University of Portland (6-1). They begin their conference schedule against North Dakota on Friday in Grand Forks before traveling to face the Bears on Sunday.
Vandals third year head coach Abid Akbar has a lineup featuring two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and one redshirt-freshman. Mark Kovacs is 0-3 at No. 1 singles. Carlos Longhi Neto is 0-3 at No. 2 singles, and Gilherme Scarpelli is 0-3 at No. 3.
Kovacs and Neto Longhi has have a winning record (2-1) at No. 1 doubles for the Vandals. Last season, Idaho beat UNC 6-1 in Moscow. Kovacs defeated Connor Finerty at No. 1 6-2, 6-4. Kyle Pease was a winner at No. 3 against Longhi Neto though 6-2, 6-2. The Bears will likely need to turn doubles around if they want to win. They lost at all three doubles positions in 2017.
FOR THE BEARS
As a team, the Bears are 19-23 in singles, 10-9 in doubles. Connor Finerty is 3-4 at No. 1 singles and Kyle Pease is 3-3 at No. 2. Like last season, the team is looking to capitalize on point opportunities in doubles competition. So far Coach Gendron has used just four combinations.
Finerty and Cassell King are 3-4 at No. 1. Michael Kritzinger and Nick Wade are 2-4 at No. 2, and Kyle Pease and Tommy Smalley are 4-0 at No. 3. Alex Exsted and Ryan Hardin have also played together at No. 3 for one match.
BIG PICTURE
The Bears have 17 regular season matches left this season including 11 on the road. Last season UNC finished 8-13, 3-8 in the Big Sky, 8-4 at home, and 0-6 on the road. The last time they defeated Idaho was Feb. 19, 2016. The last time they won against Eastern Washington was Feb. 28, 2014.
