Historic first quarter leads @UNCBearsWBB over Sacramento State

UNC women's basketball outscored Sacramento State 33-0 in the first quarter to start Big Sky play Saturday
It was the start of a new season for UNC women's basketball, as they began Big Sky Conference play on Saturday afternoon. The Bears ended up starting it off with a bang, holding Sacramento State scoreless in the first quarter to lead 33-0. That lead was enough for the Bears as they improved to 6-4 overall, and 1-0 in the Big Sky with an 82-69 win inside Bank of Colorado Arena.
In the win, two Bears set career-highs in Krystal Leger-Walker and Micayla Isenbart. Leger-Walker, recorded a career-best 11 assists, finding wide-open teammates throughout the game. Meanwhile, Isenbart tore apart the middle of the Hornets' zone defense, consistently making 10-footers from the free throw line on her way to 24 points. She shot 9-of-20 from the field, including making a trio of 3-pointers.
Savannah Smith scored a team-leading 25 points in the game, including the first nine of the game all from downtown. She not only dropped 25 points on Sacramento State but also had six assists, seven rebounds and five steals.
The incredible first quarter included the following numbers:
- Sacramento State shot 0-for-18
- The Hornets committed six turnovers.
- UNC shot 50.0 percent (10-20)
- Savannah Smith led all players with 13 points.
Holding the big lead, Northern Colorado went on to cruise to victory as Sacramento State got no closer than 11 midway through the fourth quarter.

While the 33-0 quarter stands out, a key to building that big lead was good ball movement and movement without the ball. The Bears ended the game with 20 assists, eight of them came in that big first quarter.
Game notes
- Krystal Leger-Walker's 11 assists tied for the second most assists in a UNC Division I game. She is the first Bear since Savannah Scott in 2016 to have 11 assists.
- The Bears recorded 51 rebounds as a team on Saturday, tied for the sixth most in the program's DI history. It is the second time this season UNC has grabbed 50 or more rebounds. The other game against Denver with 50.
- Ali Meyer extended her streak of games with double-figure rebounds to eight games as she grabbed 12 on Saturday.
- UNC's home win streak now stands at 10, tied for the fifth longest in program history.
Around the Big Sky
Northern Colorado joined Eastern Washington, Montana State, Idaho and Montana in opening the Big Sky season at 1-0. Now with 11 teams in the conference after the departure of North Dakota, Portland State was the lone team not to play on Saturday.
