Montana eliminated UNC from the Big Sky Tournament with a 1-0 win
OGDEN, Utah – It had been a tournament, and season for that matter, of Northern Colorado's offense against the defensive mindset of the opponent. That was the case again on Sunday in the Big Sky Tournament Title Match against Montana. The Griz came into the final game of the tourney having not allowed a goal in their two wins compared to the Bears six goals in 180 minutes. Unfortunately for UNC, they weren't able to add to that goal total against UM and the Griz ended the Bears season with a 1-0 win.
The first 45 minutes went exactly how Montana wanted, UNC was held to just a single shot. That changed in the opening minutes of the second half as the Bears came out on the attack but Montana was able to use that against them. UM got the ball to the sideline and sent a great pass down the middle of the field that allowed Alexa Coyle to run underneath the ball as Taylor Washington came out to make a play. The two collided, but Coyle was able to get enough on the shot to sneak it past the keeper and into the back of the unguarded net.
The Bears didn't panic having been in a nearly similar position earlier this season in Missoula they kept up the attack getting a number of shots and headers toward the net. But, unlike the September meeting, Claire Howard wouldn't allow a late goal to extend the Bears season.
Lexi Pulley likely had the best chance for the Bears when she gained control of a scramble just outside the box and sent a balling soaring toward the upper left corner, however, it broke too much and sailed just wide.
The Bears ended up with seven shots and two on goal.
This was UNC's second-straight appearance in the tournament title match and third in four years.
Seniors Mariel Gutierrez and Maddie Roberts were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with freshman Lindsi Jennings.
