UNC women's basketball looks to make it three straight against San Francisco Friday
Winners of two straight, Northern Colorado women's basketball looks to extend its win streak to three games on Friday when they face the University of San Francisco. The Bears overcame a 13-point deficit at Colorado State earlier this week to pick up their second win of the season. USF and UNC are set to tip off at 3 pm MT.
Opening Tip
• Northern Colorado overcame a 13-point deficit to Colorado State on Tuesday in a 53-47 win.
• Freshman Micayla Isenbart was a huge spark off the bench for UNC, scoring a career-high 17 points.
• The Bears defense came up big in the final quarter, holding CSU to one field goal and one free throw.
•UNC is in the middle of a three-game road trip with the trip to California sandwiched between a pair of in-state games.
•San Francisco is 2-1 on the season, coming off a 65-62 win over Cal Poly. The team's lone last of the year came against Stanford on the road.
• The Dons should be well rested when they play the Bears having last played since Sunday.
• USF came to Greeley last season when the Bears came back from 13 points down to defeat the Dons 73-60.
Last Time Out
A sluggish first half led to an early 13 point deficit in the third quarter, but Northern Colorado came storming back with its defense to win 53-47 over Colorado State. Freshman Micayla Isenbart gave the Bears a huge spark off the bench with 17 points. UNC held CSU to 9.1 percent shooting in the fourth quarter of the win.
Scouting the Dons
Ball movement and team basketball is the key for San Francisco as they average an impressive 15.3 assists a game. USF is led by Julia Nielacna and her 16.7 ppg. Guard Abby Rathbun is the straw that stirs the Dons offense though, scoring 12.7 points a game and 4.0 assists per game.
Defensively, USF looks to turn teams over forcing 17.3 a game, including 10.7 by a steal. When teams are able to keep the ball they have been able to score against San Francisco scoring 73.7 points a game and shooting 39.2 percent from the field.
History against San Francisco
Friday's game concludes the third home and home series between UNC and San Francisco. The Bears aim to sweep this series as they did in 2010 and 2011 after winning last season 73-60. Overall, Northern Colorado leads the series 5-1.
Against the WCC
UNC has played against teams from the West Coast Conference 27 times before going 12-15 in those games. Last year UNC was 3-0 against the WCC defeating USF, BYU and Pacific. This season the Bears play two WCC teams in San Francisco and BYU.
On This Date
Northern Colorado has gone 4-6 when playing on November 23, but are looking for their first win on the date when playing on the road. UNC comes into Friday's game 0-4 when on the road on the date including the last time they played on the 23rd of November in 2012 at San Diego.
Finding Her Role
For an incoming freshman, it can be hard to go from the star of your high school to coming off the bench in college. For freshman Micayla Isenbart she is settling into her role well. In the team's win over Colorado State, she scored a career-high 17 points off the bench which proved big as the team struggled to score early on.
What's Ahead?
The Bears close out their three-game road trip with a trip south on I-25 to the United States Air Force Academy. UNC will face Air Force on Wednesday, November 28 at 5 pm.
