UNC football ended the 2018 season in a 35-7 loss at Montana State
BOZEMAN – In their final game of the 2018 Northern Colorado football was unable to overcome mistakes and poor field position as they fell to Montana State 35-7 at Bobcats Stadium.
The Bobcats took advantage of four Northern Colorado turnovers, turning them into 28 of their 35 points. MSU won the turnover battle 4-1. While UNC struggled with turnovers they also did not have great field position all day, with an average starting spot of their own 22.
In the second quarter, UNC ran eight of their 19 plays from inside their own 10 yard line and 13 of them inside the 25-yard line.
Not a big passing team, Montana State went to the ground often in the game ending up with 283 of their 329 coming from the rush.
The game started on a good note for the Bears as they moved right down the field relying heavily on the run. Milo Hall picked up 34 of the 77 yards on the drive on a rush down the left sideline. The drive was capped off as Dontay Warren took the direct snap and ran it in from 8-yards out.
After that the turnovers started to mount for the Bears, with three in the first half and another in the fourth quarter
Northern Colorado had its opportunity to work back into the game in the third quarter by forcing a fumble on the opening drive of the second half. UNC drove into MSU territory but had the 42-yard field goal attempt blocked.
MSU scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
What They Said
Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr
About the seniors playing their last game
"It's a good group of kids. We had so many aspirations for this season. For it to end like it did it is a big disappointment. For ninety nine percent of them this is their last go around and it sucks for it to end like this."
On the mistakes that hurt the team
"It is tough to come out and play well after giving up for turnovers. As a defense you just have to come out and get the stops and get it back to the offense. You must give a lot of credit to Keaton Mott. He was a game time decision with his hand and he went out and gave us everything he had. You could tell the different, but we appreciate him gutting it out."
How the defense stepped up to the challenge
"You want to have your defense always up for the challenge to stop the opponent no matter where the ball is on the field. The mentality is to go out as a defense you want to go out and stop them. They did a good job of doing that today even in the situations they were in."
Game Notes
- Milo third 100 yard rushing game of the year, finishing the season with three in final four games. He finished the day with 21 carries for 112 yards
- UNC ended up with balanced offensive numbers, passing for 144 and rushing for 158.
- In his final game as a Bear, Henry Stelzner led the team in tackles with eight, seven of them solo.
Northern Colorado now turns its attention to the 2019 season starting with the early signing period December 19-21 and then National Signing Day on February 6. The 2019 schedule will be released later this year.
