GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado fell behind early and could not climb back Saturday night at UC Davis Health Stadium, losing 33-6 to the Aggies.
The Bears drop to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Big Sky play. UC Davis improves to 5-3 and 3-2.
Slow Start
UC Davis scored on its opening drive, a five-play, 40-yard march capped by a 9-yard run from Jordan Fisher, and the Bears went three and out on their first possession. The punt was partially blocked, and the Aggies punched it in again to make it 14-0 less than twelve minutes in.
The Aggies added a field goal before halftime and took a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
"We were used to being a lot better team on third down than we were tonight," head coach Ed Lamb said. "UC Davis created some third and shorts that really helped them out, but even some critical third and longs where we could have gotten off the field, we didn't. It was just an awful start to the game. We had to take a gut punch and fight back."
Mozer Breaks the Shutout
Northern Colorado's best moment came in the fourth quarter. Brayten Silbor found Marcus Mozer for a 23-yard touchdown, capping an eight-play, 78-yard drive. The two-point try failed, leaving it 27-6.
It was Mozer's fourth receiving touchdown of the season, giving him the team lead, and his first since Northeastern State on Sept. 19. For Silbor, it was his third passing touchdown of the season.
Butts Keeps Producing
Dominic Butts recorded a sack and a tackle for loss, giving him 21.5 career tackles for loss, tied for the seventh-most in UNC Division I history. His 10.5 tackles for loss this season are a new career high and tied for the eighth-most in a single season in the Division I era.
Younger Bears Get Work
Lamb pointed to the play of some of his younger contributors as a positive on a difficult night. Joshua Gallien recorded a tackle for loss, and others saw snaps as the game wore on. On offense, Collin Fasse got involved for his first catch.
"We're still playing, still coaching, still having a good time," Lamb said. "That's critical as we're trying to build this thing. We got to keep enjoying football. It's great to win, that's the objective, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy the great efforts that are going on."
