Bears Shutout Thunderwolves in Season Opener

GREELEY, Colo. –Northern Colorado defeated Colorado State, Pueblo 7-0 at Work Out West Fitness Center in Greeley Saturday morning. The Bears swept doubles play led by a strong performance at No. 1 by the pairing of Tristen Bryant-Otake and Rafa Mora. They completed their 6-3 set in 25 minutes. The momentum carried over into singles, with Mora leading the way at No. 1. UNC defeated CSU-Pueblo by the same score in 2016-17.
Doubles:
In doubles, No. 1 Tristen Bryant Otake and Rafa Mora dispatched Tia Matthews and Kali Hamilton after jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. Mora was able to serve out the set, winning a deciding deuce point for a 6-3 set. UNC swept doubles when No. 2 and No. 3 finished within two minutes of each other.
At, No. 2 singles, freshman Tristen Bryant-Otake was the first singles player off the court for the Bears. She used a consistent groundstroke attack, using two hands off both wings to defeat Hamilton in under an hour, giving UNC a 2-0 lead.
Rafa Mora played well at the No. 1 singles spot, serving well in the first set, firing a pair of aces in the final game to go ahead 6-4. In the second, she jumped out to a 4-Love lead before dropping to 4-3 at the change of ends. Serving for the match at 5-4, Mora came forward on match point and hit a volley winner to win her match and also give the Bears the team win.
Northern Colorado returns to action on January 20th to face Colorado. The match will take place at Work Out West Fitness Center at 12 pm.
