@UNCO_Wtennis Serves into Season at Air Force Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In women's tennis, the Bears kicked off their 2017-18 campaign with a trip to the Air Force Invitational. Several UNC players found success in their respective draws at the event. Most notably, freshman Tristen Bryant-Otake did not lose a match en route to first place in her draw at No. 3 singles.
Bryant-Otake defeated Sabina Jeresic (Arkansas State) in the opening round Friday morning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. She then won a closely contested round two match against Hada Chang (Denver). Bryant-Otake lost the first set 1-6 before coming back to win sets two and three 6-3 and 6-2, respectively. Bryant-Otake took received a default to win the championship over Devin Chypyha (Arizona) to become the first player from Northern Colorado to win their bracket in the Air Force Invitational in the three seasons the team has competed.
"The Air Force coaches always put on a great event and the competition was very good. Everybody had a successful weekend, whether that means coming off with wins or improving match by match while playing hard. We have 5 freshman and it was exciting to finally watch them in action. They all are great competitors with a lot of passion," said Head Coach Brenda Gallegos after the match.
Junior Anna Battersby returned to No. 1 singles and won her seventh place match in three sets over Shelby King (Arkansas State) 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"Anna showed some great improvement throughout the tournament. She's starting to gain more confidence with each match and I'm excited to see what she can accomplish in the next tournament," said Gallegos.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Madeline Doherty picked up a win over Charity Sagiao (Southern Utah) in her opening round match before falling in rounds two and three. Carrigan Blanchard also won a match against Arkansas State's Kirsty Venter in round two of the No. 6 singles bracket.
In doubles, Raffa Mora and Tristen Bryant-Otake won their opening round match against the pair of Devlata and Masip from Air Force before falling to Fumagalli and Barnickel (Air Force). Anna Battersby and Madeline Doherty defeated Phillipova and Zander (Montana State) for seventh place at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Freshman Mana Koitabashi and Madeline Doherty won a match in the opening round 8-3 over Sagiao and Tobrand of Southern Utah before falling in the second round to Walker and Cheverie (Montana State) 8-3.
Next weekend the Bears will be off but are hosting an Alumni Event in Greeley. They will be back in action in the Wyoming Invitational on September 29th through October 1st in Laramie, Wyo.
