GREELEY- Colo. -- The UNC men's and women's tennis programs are excited to welcome all tennis alumni and former coaches, and their families, back for a wonderful fall weekend on campus.
Â
This alumni reunion, scheduled for Sept. 22-23, will be the first event of its kind in the long and storied history of UNC collegiate tennis. It will be an opportunity for the players of the past to reconnect as well as a fun opportunity for current and former members of the Bears to meet and share their stories. In addition, current members of the team get the chance to meet UNC women's tennis pioneer Rosemary Fri.
Â
In 1963, Fri became the first women's tennis coach at the University of Northern Colorado. During her tenure, the UNC women compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including two fourth-place showings at the NCAA Division II championships (1983, 1992). Fri twice received the Wilson Coach of the Year Award and was named Sportswoman of Colorado Coach of the Year in 1992. In 1994, she was a member of the first class to be inducted into the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame.
Â
Instrumental in the growth of tennis in Northern Colorado, Fri in 1999 received the Colorado Tennis Association's Bud Robinaeu Award for her contributions to the community. Then in 2001 she was honored with the Intermountain Section's David Freed Award for her lifetime service to tennis.
Â
"Rosemary coached tennis at Northern Colorado for over 40 years," said UNC women's head coach Brenda Gallegos. "Having this alumni event with Rosemary in attendance will be a great way to honor her as well as reconnect past and current tennis players in the program."
Â
Gallegos began coaching at UNC as the assistant coach under Fri in 2003 and has been the head coach of the program since 2004. Between Gallegos and Fri, UNC women's tennis has been in good hands for over 50 years.
Â
During the alumni weekend, current and former players of both the men's and women's teams and their families will be taking part in a breakfast with the current team at Butler Hancock Tennis Courts, attending the UNC football game against Idaho State, and going to a tennis banquet at the University Center Ballrooms.
Â
Northern Colorado encourages those interested in the event to register at a cost of $35. For a complete schedule of events and to sign up, please follow the link below.
