Seattle Takes Series Against @NCBearsBaseball
4/9/2017 5:48:00 PM | Baseball
Northern Colorado fell 10-1 Sunday, and drops the series to Seattle 2-1.
How it Happened
Northern Colorado was held hitless until the third inning, when Corey Nakakura roped a leadoff double down the right field line. Alex Kiel moved him over to third with a well-placed sacrifice bunt. Nakakura was then brought home by fellow Hawaiian Tyler Yamaguchi, who hit a deep fly ball to center for a sac fly making it a 1-0 game.
Seattle didn't waste time getting back in the game with some clutch two-out hitting. After Curtis Perinn was hit by a pitch, Jeffery Morgan came up with the big hit. He took a jammed shot to center field scoring two, and having the bases cleared as Nick Tanner misplayed the ball.
SU extended its 3-1 lead in the seventh. Just like in the fourth, the Redhawks used a two-out rally. It began with an Austin Livley single to center field. The inning continued on another, UNC error, this one by Brett Minnick on a hard hit, but playable ball down the first base line off Sean Sutton's bat. That error ended up costing UNC five runs in the inning, including a Michael Ciancio home run.
That five-run inning was all that Seattle needed to separate themselves from the Bears. The Redhawks added on two more insurance runs in the eighth to make it a 10-1 game.
Game Changer
Jeffery Morgan's jam shot single turned out to be the big hit of the game. He was able to get his bat on the 0-1 pitch and clear the bases for Seattle. It was his only hit of the game.
Notable
- Two-out rallies were big for Seattle, as they were 10-for-18 in plate appearances with two outs.
- Tyler Yagamuchi had the only RBI of the game for UNC, although he did not record a hit. That came on a sacrifice fly.
- Seattle's Sean Sutton went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.
Head Coach Carl Iwasaki
"We fought throughout the whole weekend. We came back from deficits on Friday and Saturday, and put ourselves in a hole again today. We know what we need to work on though with our pitching and defense and not have to be in the deficits that we had this weekend. This is a really good league from top to bottom. It doesn't matter who we play we have to put our best effort out there no matter what. We go out of conference for this next week, and can work on those game situations and continuing to improve as a team."
Freshman Infielder Matt Burkart
"They are an upper tier team that we battled against. Knowing that we took a game from them and should have had two of three from them, is frustrating. Still knowing how we played against an upper team is the conference will always give you confidence as a team."
What's Next?
UNC continues to play at home, when they host Air Force on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm MT.
