GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado Women's Tennis is preparing for this season's Big Sky Conference Tournament, which will take place April 27-29 at the Phoenix Tennis Center. The Bears will begin on Thursday with a quarterfinal match against Idaho State. ISU finished its season 7-4 in the Big Sky (9-10 overall) and earned the fourth seed for the tournament. The Bears finished 5-6 in the Big Sky (8-12 overall) and will be the fifth seed.
Last Time vs. Idaho State:
During the regular season, Idaho State was able to sneak past UNC by a 4-3 score in Pocatello, Idaho. In that match, the Bears were able to grab the team doubles point, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 in two very close sets. Then in singles, they got wins from Anna Battersby at No. 1 and Marissa Baca at No. 4. Both required three sets to get the Bears within striking distance of the upset.
Keys to the Match:
Head coach Brenda Gallegos has made some wrinkles to her starting line up in recent weeks and although they have not paid off completely in regards to wins during non-conference play last week, they bring a different look to Idaho State on Thursday. Courney Schulte has moved up to the No. 2 spot, while Beth Coton is in the No. 3 and Marissa Baca in the No. 4. Those changes to the line up from the first meeting will hopefully lead to success for UNC. The Bears can almost count on the No. 2 duo of Anna Battersby and Bacca to pick up a win for UNC as they are 13-4 this season.
Reasons for Season Success:
Regardless of the outcome on Thursday, UNC has had a markedly better season than last year, as they finished 4-7 in conference matches in 2015-16, 8-12 overall. One of the reasons for the improvement this season is consistency of Anna Battersby in both singles and doubles. Battersby quickly proved she was capable of playing No. 1 singles early this spring, using her good court sense to be aggressive when given opportunities but not too aggressive when on defense within a point. She has compiled a 10-10 singles record and a 13-4 record at No. 2 doubles, playing with the experienced senior, Marissa Baca.
In addition, the No. 1 doubles duo of Remi Immler and Beth Coton have been consistent throughout the spring and have compiled a 7-10 record at that spot. In singles, the only player on the Bears with a winning record is Senior Courtney Schulte. Schulte split time between No. 3 and No. 4 and holds a 10-9 overall record in singles.
Scouting Idaho State:
Hristina Cvetkovic has a 6-9 record playing No. 1 singles for the Bengals, but Idaho State has been strongest at singles positions two and three. At No. 2, Huibre-Mare Botes in 11-2 this spring and her sister Louise-Mare Botes is 12-2 at No. 3. The Bengals have used nine different doubles combinations with the most frequent being Melissa Coburn and Megan Poe at No. 2, where they have a 6-7 record. Idaho State has the youngest lineup in the Big Sky Conference and every member of the team is a freshman. Head Coach Gretchen Maloney has been with the team since 2014.
