GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado men's basketball announced the addition of Matt Johnson on Wednesday. Johnson is an in-state product from Rangeview High School in Aurora and will add depth at the guard position for the Bears.
Johnson is coming off a stellar senior season for the Raiders where he was named East Metro Athletic Conference (EMAC) Player of the Year along with First Team All-Conference honors. Johnson averaged 21.8 points per game to go with 3.2 apg, 3.1 rpg and 2.0 steals.
"We're really excited that Matthew has decided to become a member of our team for next year," Head Coach, Jeff Linder said. "He had a standout prep career for a very good Rangeview High School team, playing for head coach Shawn Palmer, and he embodies all of the values that we believe in."
Johnson finished the 2016-17 season as the fifth leading scorer in all of Colorado 5A basketball, adding a First Team All-City and an honorable mention All-USA Colorado nod to his laundry list of accolades.
Over the last three seasons, the UNC commit has led his team to three straight conference titles, along with deep runs in the State Championship tournament. His junior year, Johnson took the Raiders to the 5A State final four, coming up just short in the semifinal game.
"Matthew is a great student off the court, a tireless worker on the court, and is a high-character young man," Linder added. "I'm very excited for Matthew to join the program and to begin working with him in the near future."
Not only did Johnson excel on the court, but off it as well. He has been an Honor Roll student all four years of his high school career, carrying the highest GPA of any player on the RHS basketball team.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
· 2016-17 EMAC Player of the Year
· Fifth leading scorer in 5A hoops
· Recognized by Prep Hoops as one of Colorado's Top 10 point guards
· Averaged 21.8 points per game his senior season
Matt is the son of Mathew Johnson and Monica Jones-Johnson. He is still undecided about his major at UNC.
